Job Summary:

Under the supervision and guidance of school staff, you will serve as a reading tutor and role model in a Duval County Public School. You will be responsible for participating in community projects, receiving extensive ongoing training, and attending parenting workshops. Ensure that students with whom you are assigned increase their reading level by collaborating with classroom teachers, other school staff, parents/families, and students.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a one-on-one literacy tutor in an elementary or primary school for at least 10-20 (K-8th grade) students
  • Communicate with the classroom teacher about students' progress and needs
  • Work among other team members within your assigned school and at other Duval County Public Schools
  • Provide community literacy resources and promote literacy through community activities
  • Participate in civic and community projects designed and coordinated by the CIS Literacy Director, Coordinator, site Project Manager, and other Duval Reads Members
  • Maintain Member service records and other reporting data, and submit reports to the Program Coordinator by the set deadline and monthly
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications,
  • Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date (elementary only)
  • DCF 40 hours required within 90 days of hire (elementary only)
  • Participate in in-service trainings and Member development
  • Coordinate parents' literacy tutoring trainings
  • Maintain student data to include Individual Development Plans and progress journals
  • Creates and implements daily enrichment activity lesson plans
  • Supervises the children and engages them in activities.
  • Assists students with homework assignments during academic time
  • Enhances enrichment and recreational activities by coordinating with the teachers on Project Based Learning
  • Helps with special projects, handouts, passing out snacks, cleaning all areas, and making copies.
  • Attends field trips
  • Some weekend commitment

*Perform all other duties assigned by the Director of Literacy*

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with children under 15
  • Experience in teaching is a plus
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with school staff, parents, and community partners
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Fingerprinting/background check is required.
  • Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, and automobile insurance.
