Job Summary:
The Lumber Shipping and Dispatch Manager oversees all aspects of shipping operations within a company, ensuring efficient and timely delivery of products to customers. This role involves coordinating with various internal departments such as logistics, warehouse, and sales, as well as external stakeholders including carriers and suppliers. The Shipping and Dispatch Manager is responsible for optimizing shipping processes, managing inventory levels, and maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Logistics Coordination: Coordinate with logistics teams to ensure smooth transportation of goods from warehouse to customers' destinations.
  • Carrier Management: Select and manage carriers, negotiate contracts, and monitor performance to ensure cost-effective and reliable delivery services.
  • Inventory Management: Oversee inventory levels to ensure adequate stock availability for fulfilling customer orders while minimizing excess inventory and associated costs.
  • Order Processing: Supervise order processing activities, including order picking, packing, and labeling, to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Shipping Documentation: Prepare shipping documentation such as bills of lading, shipping manifests, and customs forms to facilitate the movement of goods across borders.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with domestic and international shipping regulations, including customs requirements, hazardous materials handling, and transportation safety standards.
  • Customer Service: Respond to customer inquiries and resolve shipping-related issues promptly to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Performance Tracking: Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, shipping costs, and inventory turnover, and implement strategies to improve performance as needed.
  • Staff Management: Supervise shipping and dispatch staff, including training, scheduling, and performance evaluation, to ensure a competent and motivated workforce.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and cost savings in shipping operations, and implement best practices to enhance efficiency and productivity.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of management experience
  • 5+ years of lumber yard experience
  • 5+ years of construction/building material experience
  • Proven experience in shipping and logistics management, preferably in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation regulations, customs procedures, and shipping documentation requirements.
  • Proficiency in using shipping software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for liaising with internal teams, external partners, and customers.
  • Leadership qualities with the ability to motivate and manage a team effectively.
  • Analytical mindset with a focus on data-driven decision-making.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing business needs and operational requirements.
  • Forklift certified
