The Asphalt Lab Technician is responsible for the testing and compliance of asphalt products to ensure adherence to agency and/or customer specifications. This position works under the direction of the Plant Manager and with plant personnel, governmental agencies, and employees across the company.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Leads and performs the asphalt plant lab activities and testing requirements
  • Performs routine testing of asphalt products and make recommendations on adjustments to material properties to ensure compliance with job, agency, or state specifications
  • Performs daily quality control testing of asphalt binders, perform lab adjustments and testing of asphalt emulsions and cut-backs, Perform data collection and reporting to meet job and agency specifications
  • Completes documentation needed to support testing procedures, including data capture forms, equipment logbooks, or inventory forms
  • Conducts routine and non-routine analyses of in-process materials and raw materials
  • Performs visual inspections of finished products
  • Participates in internal assessments and external audits as required, including AASHTO audits
  • Creates technical reports or documentation, such as deviation reports, testing protocols, and trend analyses
  • Participates in out-of-specification and failure investigations and recommend corrective actions
  • Communicates testing results to the plant, internal departments, and government agencies
  • Ensures safe lab operations
  • Maintains lab cleanliness and equipment maintenance
  • Partners with the Assistant Plant Manager to address product issues or concerns, training of plant personnel, understanding of quality and compliance and reporting requirements
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Certified to conduct QC/QA material samples in compliance with prescribed specifications in accordance with AASHTO, ASTM, and Caltrans.
  • ASTM and other qualified training certification centers will be provided to gain recertification, certification, and additional skills to complete assigned tasks
  • Technicians will be certified to do all tests instructed to conduct
  • Must be able to obtain certifications and renew certification before they expire
  • Display a high level of organization and prioritization for tasks at hand
  • Demonstrates flexibility to effectively deal with changing priorities and timelines through analytical problem solving
  • Proven time management and follow-through skills with the ability to work on multiple tasks with tight deadlines
  • Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team-oriented environment
  • Display superior written and oral communication skills and effective listening skills
  • Maintains a tactful, mature and professional demeanor with well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse personnel

Education and/or Experience

  • High School diploma required. An associate degree or a bachelor's degree is preferred
  • 1-3 years of experience in the field or in a related area
  • familiarized and have expertise in testing soil, aggregates, hand-mixed asphalt, cold in-place recycling, and emulsified asphalt
  • They must read, understand, and follow ASTM, AASHTO, DOT county, municipalities, or any other agency testing methods
  • High Volume environment
  • Strong understanding of lab testing equipment.
  • Strong technical aptitude
  • Understand Chemistry and its application
  • Proficient in construction specific software
  • Experience with Microsoft software such as Word, and Excel
