Hampton Roads Classical is an independent, private American classical academy located in Smithfield, VA. We offer Kindergarten through 4th grade, and our vision is to expand by matriculation, adding a grade each year. We are currently seeking a third and fourth grade teacher for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year.

We are a full day academy that operates from Mon. through Fri. between 8:30am - 3pm. Our class sizes are less than 10 students. This position includes teaching all core subjects to a class of third and fourth graders. Our school year begins Aug. 20th, 2024 and ends May 23rd, 2025, with a one week teacher in-service before and after the school year.

Our teachers must have mastery of the English language, good listening skills, and be able to observe and interact with each student while maintaining good order and discipline in the classroom. Our teachers must also exemplify virtuous character and be able to interact and communicate effectively with students, parents, other teachers, and school administrators.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement the mission of the academy with direct supervision by the Headmaster.
  • Take responsibility for and promote both student learning and character formation.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly classroom and uphold the universal expectations of the academy.
  • Maintain good order and discipline in accordance with the standards and expectations set forth in the Student Code of Conduct and Discipline.
  • Communicate with parents, students, and staff in a timely, respectful, and effective manner.
  • Promote high academic standards and seek to develop the intellect of each student.
  • Implement the long-range plan and deliver thoughtful daily lessons that are aligned with the curriculum and grade level standards.
  • Create an academic environment of gravitas while fostering an encouraging atmosphere with high expectations.
  • Deliver instruction using effective, traditional, knowledge-centered, and teacher-directed instructional methodologies.
  • Conduct assessments that are challenging, straightforward, and aligned with academy policies.
  • Demonstrate loyalty to the academy and its mission.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Personal love of learning and teaching in the liberal arts tradition.
  • Experience and demonstrated desire to work with children.
  • Experience or familiarity with classical education, explicit phonics-based instruction, and classroom experience is preferred, but not required. However, our teachers must demonstrate a commitment to and a willingness to learn the classical philosophy of education.
  • Organization and task management skills.
  • A state teaching license is preferred, but not required for employment at our independent academy.
  • CPR/Basic Life Support certification is preferred, but can be attained upon hiring.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite applications like Word, Excel, SharePoint, and Teams as well as Adobe Acrobat, and Outlook email.
