Mechanical Engineer

Responsible for the mechanical design of mechanical and electromechanical machines and large manufacturing plant systems.  This job may involve assistance with installation o the machines and plant systems in the customer’s facility and troubleshooting of the same.

 

Essential Functions

1.          Responsible for designing and engineering the automated machines and systems sold to customers for manufacturing customer parts from polyurethane.  This includes making detailed shop drawings and procuring vendor quotes for key components and writing the material ordering instructions.

2.          Conduct shop and/or field tests or measurements to verify system meets project or design tolerances or specifications.

3.          Successfully complete project schedule deadlines, objectives, and requirements by reviewing project specifications, customer requirements, and project completion milestones.

4.          Coordinate and schedule project tasks with Production, Project Managers, outside vendors, and Electrical Engineers.

5.          Contribute to project success by completing assigned tasks on time and completely.

6.          Review and verify that designed items are within budget and completed on schedule.

7.          Conduct reviews at various stages of project completion to identify design details, components, procedure and methods that can be improved.

8.          Some travel required.  Periodic travel for training, out of the U.S., is required.

9.          Understanding and ensuring compliance with the plant health and safety regulations.

10.      Accepting a level of responsibility and accountability proportionate to the experience level.

11.      Proactively discusses details with project and sales managers to define desired/required functions of machines and equipment and the user interface requirements.

12.      Reviews schematics with customer’s representatives to answer questions.

13.      Performs other tasks and duties as necessary.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and drawing copiers.  The employee is also exposed to a variety of conditions that are encountered in production environments (in-house ad a customer sites).

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This is largely a sedentary role; however, ability to work within an industrial plant is required.

 

Travel

This position may require brief overnight travel.

 

Required Education and Experience

Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, and electric motor driven systems is required.  The engineer will need to calculate machine strength/stiffness to assure ability to contain pressures and operate the systems at the speeds required by the customer’s process.  Knowledge of pressure loss, pipe sizing, and other fluid flow problem solving is expected.

Typical automation systems will contain an assortment of presses, clamps, feeders, part manipulators, material cutters, temperature conditioning systems, positioning equipment, and conveyors in various combinations.  The systems require innovative thinking to provide customer solutions that reduce time, labor, and raw material usage for manufacturing parts and components across a wide range of industries.

2.      Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline and three to five vears related engineering experience and/or training.

3.      Working knowledge of fluid flows, heat transfer, mechanics, strength of materials, and eletro-mechanical system is required.

4.      Experience with SolidWorks 3D (required) or 4-8 yrs. with other 3D Computer Aided Design software AutoCAD 2D software, Excel and Word is required.

5.      The ability to work independently as well as on a project team.
