PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The ReFresh Spot is a community-driven project, that aims to bring dignity and hope through increased access to personal hygiene services for Skid Row residents experiencing homelessness. Homeless Health Care Los Angeles is the lead agency and fiscal sponsor for the project and works in collaboration with Social Model Recovery Services and Goodwill SoCal. The ReFresh Spot is comprised of three components: hygiene services, supportive services, and community engagement.

The ReFresh Spot is a safe, non-judgmental environment with no barriers to access to restrooms, handwashing, showers, laundromat services, phone charging, drinking water, and linkage to community-based resources. Overall, the project focuses on increasing the physical, mental health, and overall wellness of individuals experiencing homelessness. Project goals include:

  • Increase access to personal hygiene services in the Skid Row community
  • Increase a sense of belonging among residents while living on the streets
  • Increase workforce opportunities for Skid Row residents.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Safety Specialist works under the direction of the Safety Specialist Team Lead and is part of a multidisciplinary team of subcontractors, mental health professionals, community ambassadors, and other practitioners. The Safety Specialist works to improve the overall health and well-being of people experiencing homelessness by assisting with coordinating linkages to medical care, mental health care, substance use treatment, housing/shelter resources, and other supportive services. This position may require evening and weekend hours, for a total of 37.5 hours per week. Principal roles include de-escalating situations (as needed), monitoring a check-in system for guest belongings, taking a lead role in the Safe Passage Program, and other duties as assigned.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Implements and consistently practices harm reduction, trauma-informed care, housing first philosophy, and integrated care interventions.
  • First responder in de-escalation situations.
  • Takes lead on the Safe Passage Program.
  • Responsible for guest belonging check in system.
  • Conducts street outreach and participates in community/agency outreach events to engage the community, as needed.
  • Coordinates referrals to community resources to best support guest needs.
  • Develops relationships with representatives in other agencies to support individuals in attaining services including housing, mental health care, medical care/treatment, financial assistance, legal advocacy/counsel, and other community resources.
  • Provides referrals and warm handoffs to other service providers as needed.
  • Able to serve a diverse vulnerable client populations and communicate effectively in a culturally competent manner.
  • Able to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment, utilizing professional, open and respectful communication. Maintains a solution-focused, strengths-based and client-centered approach with managers, Directors, colleagues, co-workers, partners, and guests of HHCLA/ReFresh Spot.
  • Ensures performance management standards are met through ongoing supervision addressing barriers as they arise.
  • Maintains client records according to HIPPA and adheres to all client confidentiality requirements and standards.
  • Attends and participates in all required contractual, agency, and professional development trainings. Must complete Overdose Prevention and other trainings, as required.
  • Complies and maintains familiarity with agency and program policies and procedures and other applicable regulations.
  • Attends and participates in supervision, staff meetings, trainings, conferences, workshops, and special projects to promote professional development.
  • Models HHCLA approach, mission and core values in all communication, correspondence, community events, coalitions and advocacy efforts.
  • Reports to work on time and maintains reliable and regular attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, public health, psychology, sociology or other related field; OR a minimum of four years’ experience in working with culturally diverse and/or vulnerable populations, including co-occurring diagnosis and homelessness; OR lived experience with homelessness, incarceration and/or substance use.
  • Familiar with the principles of Harm Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Informed Care, Housing First and Integrated Care.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, office personnel, other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, high energy environment.
  • Ability to define problems and use critical thinking skills to identify solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and with others, including other employees, clients, and members of the public, face-to-face, and telephonic contexts.
  • Ability to multi-task, establish priorities and manage time, meet deadlines and perform duties under time constraints
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work demands
  • Maintain high level of concentration and attention to detail for extended periods of time
  • Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or concerns
  • Maintain a high level of ethical and professional standards in accordance with agency policies
