Summary

The Burlington Children's Space is seeking an experienced educator to join our team as a Mentor Teacher. This is a new position that affords the qualified participant the opportunity to work in classrooms with teachers as coach and mentor and as a member of the administrative team to plan and implement professional development and reflective supervision for new and experienced staff.
BCS is a vibrant, community based early care and education program with a 38 year history serving children from 6 weeks to 5 years old and their families. BCS is one of 5 Therapeutic Child Care Programs working in partnership with the HowardCenter, an Early Head Start and Universal Pre-K partner program, and a Child and Adult Care Food Program participant. We have a 5 Star rating from the State of Vermont and NAEYC accreditation and are housed in the McClure Multi-Gen Center, a building we co-own with Outright Vermont.

Duties

Responsibilities
  • With the Admin Team, actively participate in efforts to recruit and hire new staff, interns, and student teachers
  • Schedule staff to ensure classroom coverage meets compliance with required child-to-staff ratios, staff training requirements, and partner agreements
  • Observe and document a minimum of one classroom per week for at least one hour. Give feedback based on observations during team and individual reflective supervision meetings
  • Model positive classroom teaching and leadership and demonstrate a willingness to work alongside classroom staff
  • Document classroom observations and follow-up meetings for personnel files
  • Encourage staff to develop leadership skills by participating in community events and relevant committees
  • Participate in at least 1 community board or committee related to BCS
  • Coordinate internship and/or volunteer schedules and paperwork with institutions and classroom staff, providing supervision for the intern consistent with licensing and regulations
  • Train and support teachers in orienting new staff to their classroom procedures


Requirements

A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Master's Degree preferred, with at least 3 years of classroom experience and at least one year as a supervisor or mentor or the equivalent degree in social work or related field with at least 3 years of experience in school settings and at least one year as a supervisor or mentor. Because of BCS's role as a Therapeutic Child Care Center, experience with trauma sensitive practices is essential, including use of reflective practice for staff and trauma informed classroom strategies. Experience working with families in a supportive, strength based framework is foundational to all positions at BCS.
