Job Summary:
As a Sleep Technologist, you will work under the supervision of a Sleep Specialist or Medical Director. You will be responsible for conducting various sleep studies and monitoring patients during sleep. Your expertise and attention to detail will contribute to improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from sleep-related issues.

Sleep Technician Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct Sleep Studies: Perform overnight polysomnography (PSG) and home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) on patients to monitor and record physiological data during sleep.

  • Patient Preparation: Prepare patients for sleep studies by explaining procedures, attaching sensors and electrodes, and ensuring their comfort and safety throughout the process.

  • Monitoring: Continuously monitor patients' sleep patterns, vital signs, and responses to interventions during the sleep study, making real-time adjustments as necessary.

  • Data Collection: Accurately record and document data, including EEG, EKG, EOG, EMG, and respiratory parameters, to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of sleep monitoring equipment, troubleshoot technical issues, and report any malfunctions for repair.

  • Patient Education: Educate patients about sleep disorders, treatment options, and the use of prescribed devices, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines.

  • Data Analysis: Analyze sleep study results, generate reports, and assist healthcare providers in making diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

  • Compliance and Quality Assurance: Ensure that sleep studies adhere to relevant regulations and standards, such as those established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

  • Patient Follow-up: Maintain ongoing communication with patients to monitor their progress, provide support, and address any concerns or issues related to sleep therapy.

  • Documentation: Maintain accurate and organized patient records, including study documentation, consent forms, and patient history.

Sleep Technician Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred).

  • Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or RCP or RT or equivalent sleep technology certification.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Prior experience as a Sleep Technician or in a related healthcare role is advantageous.

  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting sleep monitoring equipment.

  • Strong knowledge of sleep disorders, diagnostic criteria, and treatment options.

  • Excellent attention to detail, observation skills, and the ability to work independently.

  • Effective communication skills to interact with patients, healthcare professionals, and colleagues.

  • Commitment to patient confidentiality and ethical standards.

  • Physical stamina to work overnight shifts and perform duties requiring frequent movement and positioning of patients. Ability to adapt to a changing work environment and stay updated on advancements in sleep medicine.
