The SPCA of Polk County is the oldest nonprofit no kill animal welfare organization in Polk County, having served the community for over 45 years, through pet adoptions, rehabilitation, transport, community programs and more recently a low cost spay, neuter and wellness clinic. With a facility over 10,000 sq. ft. located in Livingston, TX and caring for 150+ dogs and cats at any time.

JOB DESCRIPTION
A Veterinarian is an essential role within our non-profit organization, providing the highest level of care to community and shelter pets. With their extensive knowledge in animal diseases, behaviors and treatments, they can leverage their skills to provide general wellness services and spay and neuter services to the community and general shelter medicine to the SPCA of Polk County animals in care. DUTIES
- Drawing and management of Schedule II to IV controlled substances, recording and maintaining drug log records
- Performing physical exams on community and shelter pets
- Prescribing treatments, care plans and recommending services where needed
- ·Performing spay and neuter of cats and dogs for community and shelter pets
- Direct daily operational activities for veterinary technicians
- Develop and implement protocols for the safe treatment of all animals in line with current industry standards
- Remain knowledgeable through continuing education requirements
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- DVM Degree from an accredited school of Veterinary Medicine
- State License to practice in Texas
- DEA License, Schedule II, III, IV (preferred)
- The ideal candidate should have a strong focus on animal welfare for shelter and community pets
- The Veterinarian should possess excellent surgical and diagnostic skills
- Knowledge of no-kill animal sheltering
- Maintaining of accurate animal records including controlled substances
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to supervise and direct daily operational activities
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in an animal shelter. Potential for exposure to high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, animal waste, hazardous chemicals, sharp objects and potential hostile persons or dangerous animals.
- Ability to lift and carry objects and animals of moderate weight
- Ability to lift, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, push and other potentially strenuous activities
