Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Location: White Swan, WA

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: Repair, maintain and service electric, diesel and gasoline industrial trucks, following diagrams, sketches, manuals and manufactures specifications using hand tools, power tools and knowledge of electrical, power transmission, brake and other automotive systems. Read job order, observe and listen to truck in operation to determine malfunction and to plan work procedures. Conduct all needed preventative maintenance and trouble shoot issues as needed. Install a new ignition system, change or recharge batteries and replace transmissions and other parts using hoists. Examine protective guards, loose bolts and specified safety devices on trucks and make adjustments using hand tools. Lubricate moving parts and drive repaired truck to verify conformance to specifications. May fabricate special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields or other devices according to blueprints or schematic drawings. Must be able to read basic measurements from a tape measure, caliper or micrometer and understand volume levels in liquid measures. Proficient in diagnostics. Utilize CMMS Maintenance software system.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Know what your duties and responsibilities are and how to interact with every employee to achieve the highest results possible.

  • Communicate and coordinate efforts with drivers and department supervisors. As needed interact and communicate with outside service departments to maintain or keep the rolling stock operating properly.

  • Must be a team player as well as have the ability to regularly work independently.

  • Confers with operators and observes tests and evaluates operation of machinery and equipment to diagnose the cause of malfunction.

  • Have a working knowledge of the automotive, power transmission, electrical, brake and hydraulic systems associated with all rolling stock for the Sawmill and planning facilities.

  • Assist in training operators the proper blow down procedures of radiators and engines to prevent overheating and fire potential.

  • Able to weld and cut.

  • Using wrenches, hammers, pneumatic, crowbars and other hand tools disassembles machinery and equipment to remove, modify or make repairs.

  • Assemble machinery and equipment using bolts, weld, rivet or otherwise fastening devices using hand tools and power tools.

  • Move machinery and equipment using hoists, dollies, rollers and trucks.

  • Shrink-fit bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears and wheels to specified items, using portable gas heating equipment.

  • Insert shims, adjust tension on nuts and bolts or position parts using hand tools and measuring instruments to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.

  • Replace defective parts of machine or adjust clearances and alignment of moving parts.

  • Repair and lubricate machines and equipment.

  • Align machines and equipment using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, tape measures, micrometers and plumb bobs.

  • Have a working knowledge of the rolling stock so as to trouble shoot for upgrades and improvements.

  • Fabricate replacement parts

  • Test-runs repaired machinery and equipment to verify adequacy of repairs.

  • Cleans and lubricates parts, equipment and machinery.

  • Examines parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear.

  • Welds to repair broken metal parts fabricate new parts and assemble new equipment.

  • Records repairs and maintenance performed.

  • Enters codes and instructions to program computer-controlled machinery.

  • Work safely. Lockout or block machinery, hydraulic and chains when needed.

  • Must have good attendance to receive and maintain position.

  • Quality Standards; duties and expectations: complete all periodic maintenance PM's while meeting all specification standards set by the equipment manager and the company.

  • Ensure all rolling stock operates safely and to its full potential while meeting the operator and department needs.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Must have the ability to work with hyster drivers and communicate effectively. Demonstrate proficiency and operational understanding of maintenance and repair of power train, electrical and hydraulic systems for the sawmill and planer mill rolling stock.


Desired Minimum Qualifications: Demonstrate proficiency and operational understanding of the forklift mechanic position. Must possess a good understanding of rolling stock maintenance combined with a working knowledge of the electrical and hydraulic systems. Must be able to read and use a caliper, measuring tape, simple gauges and electrical measurement tools. Must be able to perform simple math and have good communication skills. Have good performance, safety and attendance records. Must be able to lift 45lbs. Preferable to have advance course work matched with years of experience as a heavy equipment or diesel mechanic. Must have a valid Driver's License. Must have and provide own mechanical tools. Diesel certification preferred.
