THE POSITION:
Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children is seeking Substitute Paraeducators for the 2023-24 school year to support our preschool – eighth grade classrooms. Our classroom staff use Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) in our educational settings. If you don’t currently know S.E.E. but use another form of signing and/or are willing to learn, we’d like to meet you
Support classroom staff in all classroom activities including but not limited to: Carry out classroom routines and transitions, as directed by sub plans or classroom teachers; keep track of assistive listening technology; facilitate educational and social interactions with peers during class time, recess, and lunchtime; follow student behavior and organization plans; and prepare materials.
OUR SCHOOL:
Located in Shoreline (immediately north of Seattle), our school community is a fantastic place to work for those seeking a caring, supportive workplace that is dedicated to best practices in Deaf Education. Our day school serves children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH), preschool - eighth grade and live within a 2-hour radius of our campus. Students are taught on-site by a Teacher of the Deaf (TOD) and also mainstreamed, during non-COVID times, with a S.E.E. interpreter beginning in Kindergarten. Students are supported in becoming self-confident, articulate, academically competitive learners and engaged community members who demonstrate that being deaf or hard-of-hearing is a difference, not a disability. Students wear amplification, are provided with DM/FM systems, and use simultaneous speech and S.E.E. to develop age-appropriate English and literacy. Class sizes are small, typically with 5 - 8 students in a homeroom grouping, served by a TOD and a Paraeducator/S.E.E. Interpreter.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Openness and desire to learn and be trained on new tasks and responsibilities
