POSITION TITLE: Project YouthBuild AmeriCorps Construction Instructor
POSITION STATUS: Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8 am – 4:30 pm
Reporting Structure: The Construction Instructor reports directly to the Director of Youth Services.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Project YouthBuild (PYB) is a 9-month educational, occupational, leadership and pre- apprenticeship program for young people ages 16 – 24 who have dropped out of school and have a low income. The Construction Instructor’s primary role is to teach construction and safety skills to young people enrolled at Project YouthBuild and manage the construction and renovation of affordable housing. This position requires a motivated, enthusiastic, organized and patient individual with outstanding teaching, motivational and interpersonal communication skills. The Construction Instructor will coordinate with all Project YouthBuild staff in a holistic approach to help ensure each young person’s success in the program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach construction and safety skills to young people with varying academic abilities.
  • Adapt curriculum(s), supporting materials, and teaching methods to meet the needs ofyoung people enrolled in Project YouthBuild.
  • Develop individualized lesson plans for young people as needed.
  • Conduct evaluations and assessments of student abilities and progress.
  • Grade projects, on-site training, and conduct in an equitable manner.
  • Manage groups of young people in a classroom and community based setting.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and supplies.
  • Complete required maintenance of power tools and power equipment.
  • Ensure necessary supplies, products, and tools are on site for construction projects.
  • Manage daily workflow of affordable housing renovation and construction projects.
  • Ensure data, daily attendance, grades, and case notes are entered into required reporting systems in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Responsible for maintenance of Project YouthBuild campus.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have deep respect for the ideas and intelligence of young adults.
  • Strong commitment to helping young people succeed in an innovative training program, to reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills and empower them to make a difference in their community.
  • Ability to relate sensitively to a multiracial and multicultural group of young people.
  • +2 years of general construction experience or related work experience.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Effective written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills. Strong organizational and planning skills.

  • Ability to work in varying physical environments.
  • Willing able to successfully complete OSHA-10 and National Center for ConstructionEducation and Research core training certifications.
