As an Eye Care Technician, you would be expected to maintain a professional and friendly attitude as you expertly guide patients through optical testing to determine their visual abilities.

Position Overview:

An optometric technician is a crucial member of the eye care team who assists optometrists in providing comprehensive vision care to patients. The technician's role involves performing a variety of preliminary tests and procedures to gather accurate patient information, maintain equipment, and ensure the smooth flow of patients through the clinic. The optometric technician plays an essential role in creating a positive patient experience while supporting the optometrist in delivering high-quality eye care services.

Key Responsibilities:

Pre-Examination Procedures:

  • Greet patients and guide them through the check-in process.
  • Gather patient history, including current medications, allergies, and any existing eye conditions.
  • Perform preliminary vision tests, such as visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision assessments.
  • Administer specialized tests as required, such as tonometry (eye pressure measurement) and autorefraction (automatic prescription measurement). Diagnostic Testing:
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic procedures, explaining each test to alleviate any concerns.
  • Conduct and document various diagnostic tests like retinal imaging, visual field testing, and topography.
  • Assist with contact lens fittings and measurements.

Ophthalmic Instrument Maintenance:

  • Clean, calibrate, and maintain ophthalmic instruments and equipment regularly to ensure accurate results.
  • Troubleshoot minor equipment issues and report major malfunctions to the appropriate personnel.

Patient Education and Support:

  • Educate patients on proper eye care, contact lens insertion/removal, and the use of prescription eyewear.
  • Address patient inquiries and provide information about eyeglass and contact lens options, lens materials, and lens coatings.

Record Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic health records (EHR) for each patient encounter.
  • Document test results, patient history, and any observations made during the pre-examination procedures.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist in scheduling patient appointments, ensuring optimal utilization of the optometrist's time.
  • Manage patient flow within the clinic to minimize wait times and ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Handle phone inquiries, prescription refills, and appointment confirmations. Infection Control and Safety:
  • Adhere to strict infection control protocols to maintain a clean and safe clinical environment.
  • Follow hygiene guidelines when assisting patients with contact lens insertion and removal.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate closely with the optometrist and other clinical staff to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Relay important patient information and test results to the optometrist for further evaluation and diagnosis.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology and eye anatomy.
  • Familiarity with ophthalmic equipment and diagnostic tests.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients.
  • Detail-oriented and able to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Compassionate and patient-centered approach to patient care.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
