Job Description
As a Synthetic Biologist, you will play a key role in cutting-edge research, leveraging your expertise in molecular biology, genetics, cloning, and laboratory automation. Your contributions will include technical leadership and support in laboratory studies such as strain engineering, pathway engineering, and cell-free optimization of pathways. You will also be responsible for characterizing proteins and enzymes. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to lead projects, enhancing capabilities and driving the development of innovative technical approaches. This role offers a chance to collaborate with a dynamic, multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and making significant contributions to the field of synthetic biology.
Major Responsibilities
- Conduct DNA isolation, purification, quantification, and PCR amplification, including Gibson and Golden Gate cloning.
- Work independently to meet study objectives and deliverables with some oversight.
- Support research projects, including engineering microorganisms and fungi to produce industrially relevant molecules.
- Develop and leverage laboratory automation workflows for microbial and genetic circuit characterization.
- Support projects focusing on the isolation and identification of novel microorganisms, genes, and proteins from environmental media.
- Analyze multi-omics datasets to identify and characterize feedstock conversion pathways.
- Optimize and develop molecular biology tools applicable to microbiological systems.
- Conduct technical work, producing quality results within budget and schedule.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data, contributing to technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
Note: Some domestic and potential international travel is anticipated.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- MS in Biochemistry or related field with 2 years of experience, or
- BS in Biochemistry or related field with 4 years of experience.
Technical Expertise:
- Proficiency in molecular cloning techniques such as Gibson, Golden Gate, TA, or MoClo cloning methods.
- Experience with cloning software tools like SnapGene, Geneious, or similar.
- Expertise in cell culture with model organisms (e.g., E. coli, yeast, mammalian cells) or non-model organisms.
Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
- Attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to travel.
- Medically fit for laboratory and fieldwork.
- U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 17025, GLP).
- Experience with laboratory automation.
