Accountability: The Custodian/Maintenance Person is directly accountable to the Chairperson of the
property committee, through whom all assignments, whether specified or agreed to from time to time,
are coordinated.
Relationship: Cooperate and work with the Pastor, the Session, the Property Committee and the other
members of the Staff to ensure smooth and efficient day-to-day functioning of the church’s facilities.
Responsibilities: The following is an explanation of the duties of the Custodian/Maintenance Person and
the major responsibilities of the position. The duties listed are not all encompassing, as additional duties
may be assigned as required or as they emerge.
Housekeeping: Responsible for carrying out the janitorial duties in maintaining the cleanliness of the
church facilities. These duties include, but are not limited to, cleaning and sanitizing rest rooms;
vacuuming carpets; dusting and cleaning furniture; cleaning internal glass, mirrors and walls; cleaning,
waxing and polishing tile floors; shampooing carpets, etc. Responsible for preparing facilities for church
services and other routine events, and also for special events for CCC groups or external groups
Maintenance: Responsible for maintaining physical features in good working order, such as lighting,
plumbing, heating, etc. including minor repairs.
Outside Grounds:
1. Responsible for maintaining a neat outside appearance including removal of litter or debris,
trimming, cutting hedges and shrubs, leaf removal, cleaning gutters, etc. Not responsible for lawn
mowing or snow removal, but for supplementing lawn care and for care of walkway/entrances in
snowy/icy conditions as needed to maintain safe access and an attractive appearance.
General:
1. Maintain neat and orderly storage areas and work rooms.
2. Responsible for ordering and maintaining janitorial and maintenance supplies
within the guidelines of the church’s purchasing policy.
Qualifications:
1. Three or more years of experience in janitorial service with demonstrated ability in making
minor repairs.
2. General knowledge of plant maintenance with associated skills in the areas of carpentry,
plumbing, painting, electrical work, heating and air conditioning, and kitchen equipment.
3. High School education or greater preferred.
4. Physically healthy, capable of manual labor and able to handle emergency situations
which may arise.
5. Integrity, honesty, sound judgment and maturity.
6. Reliable and punctual.
7. Friendly, outgoing, courteous manner in dealing with others.
8. Ability to relate well with other staff and members of the congregation.
9. Willingness to accept and perform other duties as requested.
10. Self-starter, ability to complete assigned tasks and maintain a schedule without direct supervision.
