They ensure data accuracy, assign codes for insurance reimbursement, record information, and keep file folders and electronic databases up to date. The data managed includes patient information, medical histories, physician exams, test results, treatments, and services provided. In addition to their clerical duties, HIM specialists consult with healthcare professionals to verify the accuracy of information and follow best practices for security and patient confidentiality.

- Organize and manage health information data.
- Maintain the medical record, including treatment outcomes and status updates to the nurse-in-charge.
- Order medical supplies according to the department's needs.
- Rotate weekends, holidays, shifts, and center locations as needed.
- Participate in staff and department meetings.
- Share acquired knowledge and learning with the team.
- Consistently report for duty on time.
- Keep patient information private and limit personal conversations in the presence of patients.
- Demonstrate teamwork and cooperation with personnel from other departments.
- Check medical records and follow up on obtaining missing results prior to patient appointments.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
