Job Description

The Lead Child Care Teacher is responsible for designing and implementing a daily program that addresses the physical and developmental needs of a group of children. This role requires effective supervision of staff, sensitivity to the needs of each child, and the ability to foster positive relationships with both children and adults.

Key Responsibilities

o Develop and execute a daily schedule of developmentally appropriate activities for a classroom group of children.

o Ensure the care and safety of assigned children.
o Maintain and arrange a classroom environment that supports children’s growth and development and

promotes optimal functioning of the program.
o Address the needs of individual children considering their cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds,

disabilities, and learning styles.
o Uphold the dignity and rights of every child.
o Guide children in developing self-care routines and adapting to real-life situations.
o Communicate with the Administrator/Director about children with special needs or families with

challenges impacting the child’s experience at the center.
o Conduct daily health observations and report any concerns.
o Facilitate parent-teacher conferences bi-annually or as needed and actively engage parents in the

educational program.
o Maintain records on the emotional, physical, social, and intellectual development of children.
o Collaborate with parents to address behavioral challenges and arrange necessary conferences.
o Mentor and support the professional growth of assistant teachers, aides, and volunteers.
o Participate in and contribute to staff meetings, training sessions, workshops, and other professional

development activities.
o Fulfill continuing education requirements as mandated by state regulations.
o Ensure that classroom equipment and materials are accessible, appropriate, and well-maintained. o Assist in evaluating assistant teachers and perform maintenance duties as requested.
o Contribute a monthly article for the center’s newsletter.
o Assist with public relations efforts, events, and other duties as assigned.
o Create a welcoming and conducive atmosphere for both staff and children.

Physical Demands:

o Regular activities include standing, using hands, reaching, climbing, kneeling, and communicating effectively.

o Occasionally required to lift/move objects up to 40 pounds.

o Work conditions may include outdoor activities in a range of weather conditions.
o Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential

functions.

Qualifications:

o Associate degree (or higher) in early childhood education or a closely related field; OR
o Completion of at least 60 credit hours or an associate degree (or higher) in any subject area with at least

12 credit hours in early childhood education; OR
o Enrollment in a degree program provided that the teacher holds a Child Development Associate (CDA)

and earns an associate degree (or higher) within four years of their initial date of hire as a teacher at a child development center licensed by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).
