Job DescriptionJob Description

Position Description:
Assists the surgical team in the care of the patient in the operating room. Assists in preparing the room and patient for surgery. Functions as a scrub nurse during surgical procedures. Assists in the transfer of patients to the post anesthesia recovery area and in the turnover of the operating room. Obtains supplies and instruments for assigned cases during surgery. Must have hospital experience. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Knowledgeable about gowning, gloving, and scrubbing for surgery

·       Thorough knowledge of principles of asepsis

·       Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each individual surgical procedure

·       Assists with surgical prep, draping and positioning of patient as directed

·       Maintains safe environment for patient, coworkers and self as per hospital policies and procedures

·       Provide patient support as needed

·       Performs surgical duties competently

·       Adheres to departmental, hospital, and personnel policies

·       Demonstrates resource management skills to ensure cost containment

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

1.      Holds a certificate of completion in OR technology, or receives certification within one year of hire

2.      BCLS certification

3.      Experience preferred, but not necessary

4.      Human relation skills are needed for personal interaction with patients and staff, to understand instructions, medical terminology and concepts, and to keep accurate records

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Verbal ability is necessary to communicate with patients and staff; to understand instructions, medical terminology and concepts; and to keep accurate records.
  • Manual dexterity is required to use hands skillfully.
  • The physical demands are standing, walking, lifting, and pushing patients and/or carts, wheelchairs, reaching, handling, fingering of instruments, equipment, dressings, stooping, climbing, crouching, grasping, repetitive motions, medium work requirements, etc.
  • Form perception and near visual acuity to observe pertinent details of equipment and patients.
