SUMMARY 

Under the direction of the Director of Facility Operations and Services (FOS), the person in this role will perform journeyman quality work in the maintenance, repair, construction, alteration, forming, framing and finishing of the School’s buildings and facilities; remodeling and construction of buildings and equipment; performs other related duties as required.

This is a full-time, 12-month, hourly position. Some evening and weekend work is required. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Perform skilled carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, construction, alteration, forming,
  • framing, and finishing of buildings and facilities.
  • Construct, install, maintain, and repair woodwork.
  • Interpret, explain and apply building codes, rules and regulations involved in assigned maintenance activities.
  • Effectively and safely operate a variety of tools and equipment used in the skilled carpentry trade.
  • Interpret shop drawings, sketches, and work orders.
  • Perform heavy physical labor.
  • Understand and communicate blueprints.
  • Make accurate arithmetical computations.
  • Maintain routine records and reports.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Estimate labor and material costs.
  • Perform duties effectively, timely, and without supervision.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Other work assigned throughout the FOS team and ticketing system. 
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. 

Qualifications and Education Requirements: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have at least 3 years of carpentry experience.
  • Valid and clean Texas driver's license. 
  • Trade tools, equipment, materials, methods, and techniques used in skilled carpentry and in general maintenance and repair.
  • Appropriate health and safety precautions and procedures.
  • Technical aspects of the carpentry field.
  • Proper methods of using equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Must know and understand Federal, State, and local building codes and regulations.
  • Must be able to operate and use hand and modern power tools and equipment.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Shop math applicable to the building trades.

Work Environment

Work is conducted mostly outdoors, with some completed in the shop or office. Depending on the project load, some nights and weekends may be required.

Physical Demands

Walking, sitting, standing, stooping, climbing stairs/ladders, moderate lifting, repeated bending, and repetitive movements are all a part of this position. Operating a computer and operating some mechanical equipment is also required—the ability to complete outdoor jobs in various weather conditions, rain, heat, cold, etc.
