Position Summary

Performs administrative and clinical duties assigned for all patients by identifying the best method for retrieving specimens; preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing screening procedures. Comply with organizational policies, procedures, standards of care and related laws and regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA and all accreditation agency regulations.


Essential Duties & Functions

  • Collect blood samples from patients,
  • Practice proper patient identification,
  • Maintain an organized and clean work area based on state health laws and the guidelines of our medical organization
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures.
  • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
  • Perform screening tests; safely and accurately draw blood; complete standing orders
  • Develop effective collection techniques as they relate to groups such as pediatric and geriatric patients
  • All other duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • Support the Mission, Vision and Values of TFHC
  • Work collaboratively by mentoring new and existing care team members, building bridges and creating rapport with team members across the organization
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with regulatory agencies and established organizational policies and procedures
  • Must adhere to all HIPAA, OSHA, accreditation agency and TFHC rules and regulations
  • Complete all duties assigned timely and accurately
  • Openly, clearly and respectfully share and receive information, opinions, concerns and feedback in a supportive manner.


Required Education, Certifications, Licenses, & Training (minimum requirements)

  • High school diploma, or equivalent
  • Graduate of an accredited school with a Phlebotomist.
  • Must possess a valid state phlebotomy certification.
  • Current BLS Certification


Required Years of Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Minimum of (6) months’ experience in a Phlebotomist role
