Paraprofessional/Student Aide:

Job Purpose:

Paraprofessionals/Needs Specific Aides are employed to assist the Classroom Teacher and/or SLA administration in performing the duties of educating and maintaining the wellbeing of our students; and are required to implement special education or related services for a class and/or an individual student. Their duties will vary depending upon the needs of the day, ages of students served as well as the nature of the student’s abilities and challenges.

This job description describes in general terms the normal duties that the assistant will be expected to undertake. However, the job or duties described may vary or be amended from time to time without changing the level of responsibility associated with the job.

Duties:

Teaching and Learning

  • Assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of classroom teachers or SLA administrators.

  • Assist in the implementation of SLA Individual Education Plans (SLIP) for the students and monitor their progress.

  • Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.

  • Work with other professionals, such as speech therapists, occupational and physical therapists, and ABA interventionists.

  • Assist classroom teachers with maintaining student records, as requested

 

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist in the preparation and display of student work.

  • Assist classroom teachers with copying items to support teaching.

  • Assist with extended care if scheduled.

  • Be capable of physically assisting students with special needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, Safety Care techniques, etc.)

  • Have demonstrated ability to work effectively under the direction of others

  • Have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others

  • Have willingness to assume any responsibilities appropriate for the position

  • Be a self motivator and use unstructured time for addressing the needs of the whole school

  • Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality, and attendance.

  • Attend staff and team meetings.

  • Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety.

  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.

All other duties as assigned.

Additional Expectations:

In performing the above duties, works collaboratively in a professional learning community with other teachers, support staff, and others as appropriate, in addressing the needs of students, developing effective practices, and developing and implementing best practices.

Actively participates in faculty and grade level or department meetings. In carrying out these responsibilities, follows school policy and procedures, standard practices, and approved curriculum, and will actively and positively support the school vision.

Is constantly observant of the needs and challenges of students and promptly engages an administrator or appropriate educational staff associates when the there is reason to suspect or reasonably believe that a student is at risk or in danger due to such issues as bullying, sexual harassment/misconduct, depression or suicide ideation, or academic failure. The teacher serves as a positive role model for students and practices the behaviors that are expected of students.

Assists in the supervision of students at school activities and events. Remains vigilant of students throughout the school day and the school location, taking the initiative to engage students when students are acting inappropriately or in inappropriate locations for the time of day.

Enhances school reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; and participating in professional organizations.

Employees have the opportunity to be trained in Safety Care ® , a behavioral safety training program which provides the skills and competencies necessary to effectively prevent, minimize, and manage behavioral challenges with dignity, safety, and the possibility of change.  Staff members who serve on a crisis team will be trained in Safety Care ®. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, lift, carry, move about, hear and speak. Employees may be required to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.

 

Paraprofessionals work under the overall supervision of the school’s principal with direct supervision provided by special education teachers.

 

Hours and responsibilities

40 hour work week

Follows EBR calendar and closings, with minor adjustments

Attend annual fund raising activity (Cheers for Children)

Attend one SLA promotional event during the calendar year
