Purpose:

Each piece of pottery we make starts in the casting department.  Production casters use molds and porcelain slip to hand-make our pottery. Using our slip-casting process, they make 30-40 pieces of pottery daily.   Casters will learn to make plates, bowls, cups, and mugs while working with several colored clays. In the casting process, it is important to balance attention to detail with time management to be successful.

 

Pottery Production Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet the weekly quota for casting the porcelain pottery specified on a daily/weekly casting report.

  • Ensure casting best practices are followed throughout the workday.

  • Review all cast pieces to ensure they meet quality standards.

  • Maintain a clean work area throughout the day.

  • Making up any additional pieces that haven’t been made or that have been lost throughout the week 

  • Must be willing and able to perform any other tasks or projects as directed.  Must be able to follow all safety protocols and will be required to wear any personal protective equipment deemed necessary for the hazards present.

 

Training Steps: 

  • Can successfully make Flat pieces, Cups, and Bowls at 40 pieces a day

  • Can successfully make and assemble mugs

  • Can successfully use and finish pieces with 2 & 3 part molds

  • Can successfully finish a full report using the Cloudware and Stormware technique

Pay Range:
The position starts at $12.50/hr for a training period of 4-8 weeks. After successfully completing the training period, the hourly rate will move to $15/hr. Below are the milestones that must be completed to be considered fully trained.

  • Learning to successfully make Flat pieces, Cups, and Bowls at 40 pieces daily.

  • Learning to make and assemble mugs successfully.

  • Learning to successfully use and finish pieces with 2- & 3-part molds.

  • Learning to finish a full report using the Cloudware technique.

For fully trained and experienced casters, opting into our incentive program offers additional compensation. Incentive pieces are compensated at 20% of the caster’s hourly rate.  

ex. A caster earning $15/hr can earn an additional $3/piece for each additional piece they produce over their quota. In this example, doing an additional 10 pieces a day would be an additional $150/week.

Professional certification:  Prior experience with ceramics is preferred but not mandatory. High School or equivalent certificate of education is required.

Working conditions

PPE is required and must be used when hazards are present or when required by company policy. Face masks are available both in the shop and by request from the shop manager. The production floor is not climate-controlled, which means the ideal candidate will be comfortable with exposure to both cold and hot working environments, depending on the seasons.

 

Physical Requirements/Essential Functions

The employee may need to sit, stand, bend, reach, and kneel, as well as push/pull and move materials. The employee must be able to lift 50 pounds and use proper lifting techniques. The position will require standing in the production area throughout the day; this job is physically demanding and requires some repetitive motion.
