Responsibilities

• · Oversees, trains, and assigns work to the operator assigned to the machine. Responsible for teamwork of members on assigned press.
• · Reads instructions from job bag and sets up or directs the setup of the press based on instructions. Ensures that job number and stock number match.
• · Determines rotation of color. Oversees (or performs, if necessary) that plates are hung correctly and in prescribed rotation; the setting of the feeder, side guides, pressures; registration; measuring pH of fountain solution; loading ink, water, powder; setting ink fountain keys; monitoring of ink/water levels and balance; loading correct stock.
• · Runs make-readies for inspection; adjusts print quality and color based on color guide or match print. Makes final pre-run inspection of job. Brings make-readies to die cutting for approval for die vinyl. Obtains QC approval and approval from Pressroom Supervisor if color is being run.
• · Operates or directs operation of press to print in accordance with job orders. Closely monitors press functions and operator during print run.
• · Pulls every 500th sheet, checking for defects and color. Checks register using loops and the press magnifier.
• · When pulling consecutive sheets, check for bounce on regular basis.

• · Maintains/tightens blankets as required; supervises washing of blankets as necessary or on pre-determined schedule.
• · Breaks down press, supervises cleaning, and sets up for next press run.
• · Performs preventive maintenance on press; makes minor repairs. Trouble shoots when problems occur on other presses. Notifies Pressroom Supervisor when supplies are needed.
• · Directs paper handlers to make certain that the floor area is kept clear, that paper needed for runs is on hand, and that printed materials are moved to proper staging area.
• · Responsible for learning any new techniques/technologies applicable to the press (i.e., cold foil application, lenticular printing, etc.)
• · Operates or assists on other presses if needed and when workload permits.
• · Assists in cleaning up press and keeping immediate work area neat and orderly.

Qualifications

 

• · A general knowledge of printing and the skill necessary to understand and perform related work routines of some difficulty.
• · A high school education.
• · Five years of pressman experience.
• · Ability to read and understand documents such as business correspondence, safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and/or procedures manuals and to write simple letters, memos, and instructions. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints and to speak to groups of customers and/or Disc employees.
• · Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals and to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
• · Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of changes in uncommon situations and to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• · Extremely accurate mental and visual effort and physical activity with constant monitoring of equipment.
• · Standing, walking, lifting, and pulling required for full shift.
• · Must have excellent close vision and be able to identify and distinguish color and bring objects into clear focus.
