Job Title: Specifications Writer

Years of Experience: 8-10 Primary Responsibilities:

· Review drawings and other documents to coordinate compliance with project requirements, institutional guidelines, firm standards, technical conditions, acceptable industry standards, and existing laws, rules, regulations, and codes.

· Consult Project Manager / Project Architect and reviews drawings to identify scope and content to write and edit specifications at various stages of design including Design Narrative, Outline Specifications, Short Form Specifications, and Full Specifications for Bid / Contract Documents.

· Assist teams in preparation of addenda.

· Collaborate with project team to ensure that specifications, drawings, and schedules are coordinated.

· Attend client and sub-consultant meetings, as necessary.

· Prepare written specifications consistent with firm and industry standards and Client requirements using MasterSpec guide specifications, BSD Speclink, client guide specifications (including Division 00 specifications), manufacturer’s guide specifications, and other specification systems.

· Self-check work for accuracy, omissions, and legibility.

· Collaborate with peer specification writers throughout firm.

· Participate in fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices.

· Incorporate Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects and functions as an internal sustainability resource.

· Participate in QA/QC reviews and checks on project documents.

· Coordinate specifications with Building Information Modeling (BIM) strategies and specification writing software.

· Assist project managers and architects with material and system constructability analysis.

· Perform product research; assists project designers with material selection and system research, and share/mentor team project staff as required.

· Participate in quality management reviews and technical advice in design development through construction document phases.

· Assist project architects with shop drawing and product substitution review.

· Coordinate and reviews consultant technical specifications for conformance with firm standards.

· Act as a risk management resource to other project leaders.

· Develop and maintain relationships with vendors.

· Develop new specification sections as needed.

· Participate in developing and improving firm document standards and best practice procedures and bridges the gap between design professionals, specifications, LEED, QA/QC, and construction administration.

· Attend relevant in-house CEU and product presentations to stay abreast of current material and process innovations.

· Mentor and train emerging professionals and Project Managers on the specifications process.

 

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

· Strong knowledge of architectural design, engineering coordination, design trends, products, construction methodology, building systems, material application, and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness.

· Strong knowledge of construction procedures and schedules.

· Strong knowledge of building envelope components, interior plans and material requirements of all building and facility types. Advanced knowledge in sports, convention centers, aviation or other large assembly type specifications is preferred but not required.

· Strong knowledge of building codes and ability to research and apply/incorporate into technical documents.

· Strong decision-making skills.

· Self-starter who takes direction and feedback and has solutions-based approach to problem solving.

· Strong verbal and written communication skills.

· Strong computer skills with an emphasis on MS Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, MasterSpec, and BSD Speclink.

· Ability to produce well-coordinated, detail-oriented, fully integrated specifications.

· Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and produce results within deadlines.

· Ability to work independently and in a team environment, performing effectively under conditions of high stress and pressure.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in Architecture required.

· Architectural license preferred.

· Minimum 8 years in architectural practice with prior experience in specifications development.

· Construction Specifications Institute certification (CDT) an asset but not required.

· LEED Green Associate an asset but not required.
