What Is a Saw Operator?

A saw operator uses saws and a variety of machines to cut wood and other plastic materials. As a saw operator, your job duties involve setting up and inspecting equipment, installing blades, measuring the length to cut to specifications, and operating the machines. You must have experience with all relevant tools, including position guides and holding blocks. This career requires familiarity with both automatic and manual saws. Additional qualifications include work experience with general machinery, woodworking skills, and good physical stamina. Although not an educational requirement for this job, many technical colleges offer associate degree programs in related fields.

How to Become a Saw Operator

The qualifications that you need to start a career as a saw operator include a high school diploma and the technical skills to operate saw equipment. Employers have different requirements for job applicants depending on the industry in which they work. Most employers prefer you to have previous experience but provide on-the-job training to entry-level employees. Regardless of your position, you need to undergo safety training and must have the physical ability to operate equipment and lift and position materials that you cut. You also need math skills to perform measurements and make cuts in a way that limits waste.

Job Summary

We are looking for a Saw Operator to join our team. In this role, you will read sales orders and make the adjustments for each job. You need to be able to read a tape measure and perform basic math to set stops and guides to the specified length of each job. While you operate the machine, it is important to look for any defects or issues. Applicants for this position should have one to three years of previous experience, although we often have positions available that include on-the-job training for the right person. Since you may help pallet and transport finished pieces, having forklift experience is a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up the saw machine, making adjustments for each job
  • Set stops or guides to specified lengths
  • Operate the saw machine, keeping an eye out for any defects or issues
  • Use measurement tools to ensure accuracy
  • Help pack and transport finished pieces
  • Accurately complete paperwork
  • Insure all safety checks are complete before and during operating equipment

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  • Experience operating a saw (1-3 years preferred)
  • Forklift experience a plus
  • Basic math skills
  • Ability to lift up to 50-70 lbs.
