Product Engineer - Mechanical

Overview: PBC Linear is a leading manufacturer of linear motion systems, components, and actuators. We are searching for an experienced mechanical engineer to contribute to the design, component selection, and troubleshooting of linear motion systems and cartesian robotics using stepper motors, servo motors, drives, sensors & more. Experience leading successful product development projects is preferred. Experience modeling and making drawings using the SOLIDWORKS program and an associate or higher certification in SOLIDWORKS is highly preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge of ball, roller, and plain bearing systems involving servo, stepper, AC, and DC motors, drives and sensors as applied in motion control systems. He or she will have the knowledge to calculate system loads, moments, component stresses, component strains, and estimate the life of component. Experience performing FEA and tolerance stack-up calculations is preferred.

Besides performing product development, this experienced engineer will sometimes work with the sales team and application engineers to solve customer problems and recommend PBC Linear products to meet customer application requirements or help design new products or systems to do so. He or she will be responsible for training, coaching & mentoring newer engineers and for checking their work.

Responsibilities / Skills:

  • Leading and managing product development or other engineering projects.
  • Making CAD models and drawings with SOLIDWORKS of components, assemblies, and process drawings.
  • Performing calculations related to system loads, moments, component stresses, component strains, safety factors, and component lives.
  • Understanding and making calculations related to the motion profiles of linear motion systems.
  • Sizing motors and drives for linear motion systems.
  • Understanding and identifying the proper components to use in linear motion systems. This could include bearings, linear guidance systems, actuators, lead or ball screws, belts and pulleys, gearboxes, couplings, motors and drives, rack and pinions, sensors, and encoders.
  • Recommending general lubricants for linear motion system mechanical components.
  • Communicating with other engineering personnel, vendors and customers regarding linear motion systems and components and the issues or opportunities related to them.
  • Providing technical support of the design, construction, operation and troubleshooting of customer applications and test stands for linear motion products.
  • Mechatronic knowledge of controls, software, and mechanical actuator systems.
  • Occasionally working with the sales team and customers to understand customer application requirements and then either choose appropriate PBC products or help design new products to meet customer needs.
  • Experience programming microcontrollers, PLC’s, stepper drives, servo drives, HMI devices, etc. is preferred.
  • Programming ability using C++, C#, Python or Visual Basic is preferred.
  • Basic Microsoft Office program proficiency is required. (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.)

Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or Mechatronics. MS degree preferred.
  • 5+ years’ experience working with linear motion systems, automation, robotics, or bearings.

General Requirements:

  • Proficient using SOLIDWORKS for 3D CAD modeling and drawings. Associate certification is preferred. Experience with other CAD programs may be considered.
  • Experience and knowledge of stepper motors, servo motors, and their drives including tuning and troubleshooting.
  • Experience performing sizing and selecting calculations for motors, drives and linear motion components.
  • Experience with linear motion components, actuators, & motion control.
  • Experience doing tolerance stack-up calculations (or using specialized software for this purpose)
  • Strong problem solving / solution development skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
  • Proficient using Project planning software (Microsoft Planner, Microsoft Project, etc.)
  • Ability to travel [expected to be less than 10%]

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passed FE exam and working toward PE, or already have PE.
  • Experience with sensors and safety equipment.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) [or similar] certification.
