Job DescriptionJob Description

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director and Assistant Principals, the Art Therapist develops and provides specialized therapeutic instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.


Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:
● Plan and implement Art Therapy for groups and individuals.
● Modify all teaching methods and materials to meet individual student needs.
● Employ various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals, including following the Behavior Intervention Plans.
● Participate in the IEP process as appropriate, including development of goals and objectives.
● Develop an individualized treatment plan that incorporates creative expression, psychotherapy and counseling techniques.
● Establish goals for individual sessions and long-term objectives for therapy.
● Use art to open discussions regarding student’s individual challenges.
● Work cooperatively with team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
● Create a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction.
● Provide direction, supervision and evaluation of educational assistants in the art therapy environment.
● Complete all school and state reporting requirements, including reports detailing student performance.
● Document lesson plans.
● Attend training sessions or professional meetings to develop or maintain professional knowledge.


Credentials, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
● Minimum B.A/B.S degree in art therapy or counseling, with either Registered Art Therapist (ATR) or Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC).
● Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective counseling of students with disabilities.
● Thorough skills and knowledge on strategies and techniques for working with students with emotional, and behavioral challenges
● Ability to effectively analyze needs and problems objectively.
● Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, administration and the general public.
