Job Description: Livestock Technician
Summary:
The Livestock Technician is responsible for the care, management, and accurate record-keeping of livestock. This includes organizing animals, recording ear tag numbers, documenting weights, and maintaining detailed descriptions. The role requires a strong attention to detail and an understanding of livestock management practices.
Key Responsibilities
Animal Handling and Care:
· Assist with the daily care and management of livestock, including feeding, watering, and monitoring health.
· Safely handle and move animals within the facility or farm, ensuring minimal stress and injury to the livestock.
Data Collection and Record Keeping:
· Accurately record ear tag numbers for all livestock, ensuring proper identification and traceability.
· Weigh animals regularly and record the data in the appropriate logs or digital systems.
· Maintain detailed descriptions of livestock, including breed, age, sex, and any notable characteristics or conditions.
· Update records promptly and accurately, ensuring all data is current and accessible.
Organizational Responsibilities:
· Organize livestock into appropriate groups or pens based on age, weight, health status, or other criteria as directed.
· Assist in the preparation and organization of livestock for sales, transportation, or veterinary visits.
· Coordinate with other team members to ensure smooth operations and the well-being of the livestock.
Health Monitoring:
· Monitor the health and behavior of livestock, reporting any signs of illness, injury, or abnormal behavior to the supervisor.
· Assist in administering medications, vaccinations, or treatments as needed.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance:
· Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of livestock pens, feeding areas, and other related facilities.
· Perform routine maintenance on equipment used in handling and caring for livestock.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
· High school diploma or equivalent required.
· Degree or certification in animal science, agriculture, or a related field is preferred.
· Previous experience in livestock handling, farming, or a related field is highly desirable.
· Familiarity with livestock identification and record-keeping systems is an advantage.
· Strong attention to detail, particularly in record-keeping and data management.
· Ability to handle and work with livestock safely and efficiently.
· Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
· Basic computer skills for data entry and record maintenance.
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Capability to lift and carry up to [insert weight] lbs.
· Ability to stand, walk, and perform manual labor for extended periods.
Working Conditions:
