Custodian

Department: Recreation/Facilities                                                               Part-time: Hourly - Non-exempt

 

Position Description

The custodian works under the direction of the Custodial/Maintenance Supervisor.  Under the Supervisor's supervision, the custodian performs routine and repetitive cleaning and maintenance functions.

This is a semi-skilled and manual labor position in the cleaning and minor maintenance work.  Work could include the responsibility for the supervision of some part-time custodial personnel. Work is reviewed through inspection of results obtained.

 

General Operations

  • Performs lead work and participates in sweeping, mopping, washing, scrubbing, stripping, and waxing floors by hand or machine; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork, washes windows, screens, sills, woodwork, doors, walls, and ceilings; performs minor building maintenance repairs and painting.
  • Moves furniture, supplies and equipment manually or by use of hand truck.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms; dusts and vacuums rooms.
  • Shovels snow, spreads salt, maintains sidewalks and assists in keeping outside premises in an orderly condition.
  • Performs related cleaning work; operates mechanical equipment i.e. buffers, scrubbers, etc.
  • Collects trash, disposes of waste and replaces lightbulbs, performs routine building repairs requiring limited special skills in electric, plumbing, woodwork and other mechanical issues, and reports other needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Sets up and take down room for class programs or rentals when an attendant is not scheduled.
  • Locks and unlocks doors and windows and activates/de-activates building alarms.
  • Supervises special projects and labor crews.
  • Assists Custodial Supervisor in staff training.
  • Conducts themselves according to the policies of the Dundee Township Park District as established by the Board of Commissioners.
  • Maintains and fills vending machines.
  • Responsible for complying with all safety and loss prevention policies.  Must ensure that all                  responsibilities and use of equipment is performed in a safe, prudent manner. 
  • Must always utilize required Personal Protective Equipment. 
  • Inform supervisor of any unsafe conditions or hazardous work procedures.  Correct any unsafe conditions, if possible, and instruct co-workers on safety procedures.

Safety & Risk Management

  • Maintains a working knowledge of all general and departmental-specific safety rules.
  • Immediately reports all accidents and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
  • Cooperates and assists in the investigation of accidents.
  • Attends all required safety program and in-service education meetings.
  • Treats public complaints and concerns with the utmost attention. Is courteous in all cases.
  • Pays strict attention to housekeeping of work area(s) and general facility.
  • First aid/CPR certificate recommend


Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age or older; graduation from a standard high school.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Requires knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in facility cleaning maintenance work
  • Ability to operate vacuums, buffers, floor machines, carpet cleaners, and various other equipment used in facility cleaning and maintenance
  • Requires leadership capabilities.


Hours Standards

  • Monday – Friday varies between 7:00pm – 11:00pm or 7pm to 12am
  • Saturday & Sundays varies between 2:00pm – 6:00pm or 2pm to 8pm
  • Hours may change based on program needs or after hour rentals.
