Schaffhouser Electric is seeking an experienced, career-minded Electrical Estimator to for our Athens, TN office. The Electrical Estimator is responsible for controlling the project costs by preparing and completing bid documents and cost estimates for electrical construction projects. The Electrical Estimator will evaluate bid specifications and drawings to ensure they know what is required to bid and win projects. The right fit will be a self-starter who can meet deadlines and manage their time in an organized & efficient manner.

BASIC FUNCTION

Electrical estimators are a specialized type of cost estimator who calculates the projected costs involved in time, labor, and job materials for electrical projects that will secure profitable work for the company.

The basic function of the Estimator is to provide estimates based on company models that will:

a) Secure Industrial and Commercial electrical projects for the company.

b) Provide an opportunity for the company to make the desired profit.

c) Maintains a positive relationship with Plant Maintenance Managers, Plant Supervisors, and GC’s they come into contact with.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Estimator reports to the Southeast Regional Manager

Works in consort with the following personnel:

- All Management Personnel, all Administrative and Accounting Personnel, and IT or Support Personnel.

AUTHORITY

Full operating authority to fulfill the duties & responsibilities as described in this document, and he/she has sufficient authority to make decisions and take action required to satisfy the responsibilities of this position. Included in this is the accountability for both actions taken & actions not taken.

Evaluate all projects and develop a comprehensive plan of action (bid & scope of work) to meet all deadlines and budget constraints.

The authority to estimate contracts on behalf of the company and with guideline approval issue that estimates on behalf of the company.

Handle all related administrative matters, such as writing bid proposals according to company policy quickly and accurately.

Perform site visits when appropriate, either before, during, or even after the bid process.

Maintain open and positive lines of communication with all suppliers, subcontractors, and work crews that you come into contact with.

REQUIREMENTS

Education: This position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, a completed electrician program, and /or related experience in industrial and/or commercial electrical construction is preferred.

Experience: This position requires a minimum of five years’ experience in the electrical contracting industry, with at least three or more years in a successful estimating role. A strong industrial and commercial project management and estimating background is preferred. Experience using Accubid Pro preferred.

Experience in doing takeoffs from drawings.

Licensure/Certification: N/A. Required: Valid Driver’s License

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess an eye for detail, exposure to estimating software, and be fully conversant with spreadsheet and word processing software. Additionally, the individual must have strong organizational skills, be self-motivated, and be highly disciplined. This individual must be able to set priorities regarding work being accomplished within time constraints.

Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Extensive knowledge of all phases of industrial electrical, installation, fabrication, repairs, troubleshooting, and industrial maintenance services.

Ability to gather client information/specs needed by using analytical & observation skills.

Must possess knowledge of the Electrical Building Codes and the customer’s specs, along with who has the proper jurisdiction of the project.

Working Conditions: 90% of the time, work is performed in an office environment that is climatically controlled and well lit. The position requires standing or sitting for varying lengths of time while measuring and scaling work. In the future, the job may require being seated in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time.

In addition, 10% of the time, this position can regularly conduct site visits inside industrial plants or outdoors at various job sites. The working environment can include hot, cold, or wet conditions. From this movement, the employee will encounter varying weather conditions and temperatures. The normal travel hazards will apply. Travel will be in all types of weather, including heavy rain and freezing temperatures with icy conditions.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

The duties and responsibilities of the Estimator include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

Perform take-off and estimate project functions from a set of drawings or sketches. (within company guidelines)

Estimating from on-site inspection for restorative, installation, repairs, troubleshooting services, or add-on work.

Securing pricing estimates from suppliers that are realistic to the project.

Review when necessary with the Operations Manager and Project Manager as to the workforce and efficiency required to complete various types of work.

Developing & implementing production & installation schedules, along with detailed work instructions in consort with the PM.

Maintain close verbal communications with the PM during the project to critique projects' labor and material requirements for future reference.

Maintain regular contact with the PM during the life of the project.

Maintain regular contact with sales team on estimating deadlines and estimating bandwidth.

Document all necessary permits, certificates, bonds, and insurance policies within estimates, as required by local, state, or federal regulations.

Perform a site visit if necessary to ascertain critical dimensions as needed.

Conduct an internal post-mortem and job analysis with PM and Operations Manager.

Making it understood that THE CUSTOMER IS OUR FIRST PRIORITY, and that each employee is here to support that priority.

Promote & encourage excellence at all phases of each project by periodic reviews at critical stages, encourage peer reviews, postmortem reviews – monitoring and updating.

Any other duties and tasks may be assigned from time to time by the Operations Manager.

MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE

The Estimator at Schaffhouser shall be deemed to be performing acceptably when the following have been accomplished:

The project has been completed within the estimated budget or below.

Our bid to award ratio is considered good – based on current market conditions.

Our pipeline is full.

Cooperation, communication, & coordination between the Estimator & other company personnel have been maintained at a high level.

Has demonstrated an ability to maintain a close and productive working relationship with all suppliers, sub-contractors, and client personnel.

Has demonstrated an ability to handle all difficult situations in a cool and efficient manner.

Has maintained complete and accurate records of all projected related bidding activities, the scope of work project details, and other important documents.

Has secured sufficient work that meets company revenue quota at the company’s desired gross profit percentage.

Has maintained a professional work environment with customers and all other key personnel in the company.

Demonstrates good planning skills, which suitably fit into the overall company goals.

Other assigned duties and projects have been satisfactorily completed.
