Care Provider for Child with Special Needs

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Care Provider to support a 10 year old female child with special needs (including Autism Spectrum Disorder). This role involves providing care, medication management, meal preparation, and supporting behavior strategies as directed by the child’s professional team of therapists (including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques). The ideal candidate will have experience in nursing and/or special education settings.

 Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide care for the child during designated shifts when the family has custody of the child (the parents are divorced so they only have custody 50% of the time, which alternates full week on / full week off). When the family has the child, the schedule is as follows: M-F 7am-9am and 3pm-8pm + varied hours on Saturday and Sunday, typically totaling 12 weekend hours). The Care Provider will have the entire week off every other week.

  • Manage medication administration according to prescribed schedules.

  • Prepare meals for the child when needed, adhering to any dietary restrictions or preferences. (The child has celiac disease and maintains a 100% gluten-free diet.)

  • Dine with the child and family, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

  • Collaborate with the child's family and other caregivers to ensure consistency in care and behavior management strategies, including learning the current ABA protocols and strategies developed for the child.

  • Support the family’s efforts to maintain a clean, organized home by keeping the child's room, playroom, mudroom cubby and therapy area clean, laundering the child’s clothing and bed linens, sorting school papers and supplies daily, purging clothes and toys seasonally, and performing occasional household duties such as emptying the dishwasher.

  • Support child during showers/baths and assist with dressing and personal care.

  • Accompany child to doctor’s and therapy appointments.

  • Seek opportunities to engage the child in play and learning activities at home, as well as outside of home or school (the park, trampoline park, movies, etc.)

  • Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality for the child and family in every way.

 Qualifications. The candidate must:

  • Have completed a bachelor's degree in a related field (ABA, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Nursing, etc.).

  • Possess a First Aid / CPR / AED certification for both adults and pediatrics

  • Be compassionate, adaptable, dependable, & hard working

  • Have reliable transportation with a valid driver’s license and auto insurance at time of hire.

  • Be available to work every other week, including mornings, evenings and weekends.

  • Have strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with the child, family, and other caregivers.  

  • Have an understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and familiarity with its challenges and interventions.

  • Be able to 

    • read, write, speak and understand English and communicate effectively

    • safely lift and transfer a small adult

    • perform light household duties which may include lifting up to 20 pounds and engaging in basic recreational activities such as walking, etc.

Although not required, preference will be given to candidates who have experience in early childhood and special education settings.
