Job Description
This position operates the screed by standing on a platform attached to the paver or walking alongside. Uses the screed to lay asphalt material to project specifications including but not limited to depth, width, and grade; when not operating the screed, performs laborer duties. Must detect and correct defects in surfaces, seams, and edges. Must thoroughly understand all aspects of the paving industry, including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction, and other details related to asphalt paving. Duties & Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the efficient working condition of the equipment and is expected to perform minor servicing and maintenance.
• Operate the screed and other heavy equipment safely and appropriately, performing at industry and company standards.
• Control, monitor, and adjust the placement depth, slope, and width to meet job specifications. Use pokers to verify depth placement, smart levels to verify slope, and grade stakes to verify alignment/width.
• Responsible for regular operating adjustments to obtain proper depth, grade, and finished cross-section.
• Communicate constantly with Paver Operator and dump man to monitor truck exchange, material feed, obstacles, or site conditions, paying particular attention to overhead utilities and severe slopes that require reducing the bed height and paving speed to maximize safety, quality, and productivity.
• Perform laboring/luting in areas not accessible to the paver and tie-in locations utilizing straight edge for mainline transverse joints.
• Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials.
• May perform other related duties such as adding or removing screed extensions, installing, or removing automatic devices, grade log or other accessories associated with the machine.
• Dig, spread, and level construction materials.
• Understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
• Assist paving crew with various duties such as shoveling and raking and running wheelbarrow.
