Job Summary:

The Substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselor will advise consumers/clients on a range of issues, such as those relating to alcoholism, addictions, or depression. They provide support, including for prevention, to help clients recover from addiction, modify problem behaviors, or improve mental health.

Responsibilities:

● Fulfills the programmatic requirements under COMAR 10.47.01.04

● Coordinate services and clinical care identified as a result of a comprehensive assessment.

● Ensure the patient’s changing needs are met with appropriate type and intensity of services.

● Meets with clients to obtain personal information and medical histories and consults with other professionals to get a clear picture of the patient's status and extent of problems.

● Develop, implement and monitor a program of treatment and rehabilitation tailored to patient's individual situation based on knowledge of alcohol and drug dependency and counseling and treatment methods.

● Uses a combination of individual and group counseling sessions to help clients and observes their attitudes and readiness to accept help and guidance.

● Meets with family members to educate them on the roles they can play in the recovery process.

● Educates patients about community-based organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and social and employment services that may help restore them to productive roles in the community.

● Maintains case histories and progress reports. Modifies treatment programs based on observation.

● Assists patients with coping with family problems and recommends appropriate social services as support for the entire family unit.

● Maintains copious notes in dedicated tracking system/database in accordance with state guidelines and billing requirements.

● Performs other duties within the scope of services as needed.

Qualifications:

All staff employed as alcohol and drug counselors shall, at the minimum be:

● Licensed or certified as an alcohol and drug counselors by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists;

● Approved by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists; or Licensed, certified, or permitted under the Health Occupations Article, Annotated Code of Maryland to provide substance abuse treatment.

● Credentials. The administrator shall ensure that program staff, including students, interns, and volunteers, are credentialed and appropriately privileged.

● Policies and Procedures. All clinical staff, including the administrator, clinical director, and clinical supervisor, shall review the program's policies and procedures and shall sign a statement saying that they reviewed and understood the policies and procedures.

● At least two years of experience working with drug or alcohol abusers under close supervision.

● Strong organizational and time management skills

● Empathetic manner to deal with clients who may have multiple problems.
