Job Summary:

Responsible for the administration of injury/illness prevention, recognition, evaluation, management, treatment, disposition, and rehabilitation for student-athletes participating in the intercollegiate athletics program. Enforces health care policies and procedures regarding medical insurance, physical examinations, and related activities for student-athletes. Provides health care services specifically to designated sports and in general to all student-athletes.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that Athletic Training Services provides quality athlete care for student-athletes participating in the intercollegiate athletics program through management of all aspects of injury/illness prevention, recognition, evaluation, management, treatment, disposition, and rehabilitation, coordination of all medical health care efforts (i.e., health care providers, physicians, emergency services) necessary to support the intercollegiate athletics program, and administration of the daily operational requirements of the Athletic Training Services program. Coordinate Team Physician weekly training room visits.
  • Aid in injured student athlete transportation to doctor’s appointments. Initiate medical secondary medical insurance claims and contact student athlete parent when a claim has occurred.
  • Provide medical evaluations/treatments and rehabilitation to staff members.
  • Enables student-athletes to return to full physical function by receiving quality treatment which includes assessing the nature of their injuries, their range of motion, strength and other physical parameters, and making referrals to physicians as appropriate, enforcing the prescribed treatment protocols of physicians, and the Director of Athletic Training Services using all appropriate therapeutic modalities and exercises, maintaining accurate patient records, evaluating their rehabilitative progress, and providing feedback to student-athletes, appropriate coaches, parents, and physicians.
  • Facilitates student-athletes compliance with prescribed rehabilitative treatments by educating them about the causes and nature of their injuries through the use of models or diagrams and measures they can take to prevent recurrences, providing a thorough explanation of the reasons for and functions of the rehabilitative therapies, assisting student-athletes in correct performance of the therapies and exercises, evaluating their progress during rehabilitation, and providing the student-athletes with feedback.
  • Minimizes institutional liability in the performance of athletic training services by maintaining NATA Certification and current registration/licensure and practicing in accordance with the Missouri Board of Healing Arts and the NATA Code of Ethics.
  • Maintains individual professional competence and expands the knowledge base and ability of the Athletic Training Service to serve the intercollegiate athletics program by taking advantage of professional development and continuing education opportunities, attending professional development seminars, workshops and related activities, reading the literature published in professional journals and texts, and sharing the information gathered from these professional activities with other staff professionals and student-athletes.
  • Contributes to the overall success of Athletic Training Services by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletic Training Services.
  • Serve as a clinical instructor for the Missouri State University Sports Medicine and Athletic Training Undergraduate Program.
  • Supervise the Missouri State Graduate Students.
  • Monthly inventory to manage training room supplies.

  • Ability to assess patient needs and implement appropriate physical rehabilitation programs are required. Expertise in biomechanical assessment and computer literacy is preferred. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
  • Requires the capability to physically transport injured athletes (e.g., to the locker room, sidelines, clinic, ambulance,) in order to receive further medical care.
  • Must be certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and licensed with the Board of Healing Arts in the state of Missouri.
  • Scope of the position requires frequent evening and weekend/holiday work. 7. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Interpersonal skills are necessary to interact effectively with prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule in order to provide athletic training for home and away games.
  • Ability to obtain a Class E. Chauffeurs License.
  • Driving required to area facilities used by the Drury Athletic Department, along with possible away games.
  • Analytical skills are necessary to determine treatment strategies during practice and games.
  • Ability to operate a computer to manage the injury reporting program and Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to observe players while they perform at daily practices and games to determine need for individual safety and rehabilitation.
  • Must be willing to cover any health-related/athletic training courses for department faculty.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine, Athletic Training or a related field is required.
    1. A Master’s degree in any of these fields or a related field is preferred.
  • At least one year of experience is required in a sports medicine clinic, hospital, or high school setting.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises one to five student athletic trainers/employees in the Athletic Training Services Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
