Mechanic Duties

Ø  Clean machines and machine parts, using cleaning solvents, cloths, air guns,
hoses, vacuums, or other equipment.

Ø  Dismantle machines and remove parts for repair using hand tools, chain falls,
jacks, cranes, or hoists.

Ø Install, replace, or change machine parts and attachments, according to
diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals, schematic diagrams, and
verbal direction.

Ø  Start machines and observe mechanical operation, to determine efficiency and to
detect problems, with the aid of an Assistant Mechanic or Mechanic who is in
direct observation of the work or is providing verbal instruction by telephone.

Ø Inventory and requisition of machine parts, equipment, and other supplies so that
stock can be maintained and replenished.

Ø Lubricate or apply adhesives or other materials to machines, machine parts, or
other equipment according to specified procedures.

Ø Reassemble machines after the completion of repair or maintenance work.

Ø Transport machine parts, tools, equipment, and other material between work
areas and storage, using cranes, hoists, or dollies.

Ø  Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments using hand tools,
levels, plumb bobs, and straightedges.

Ø Align and balance new equipment after installation.

Ø Assemble, install and/or repair wiring, electrical and components, pipe systems
and plumbing, machinery, and equipment.

Ø Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.

Ø Diagnose mechanical problems and determine corrective action using blueprints,
repair manuals and parts catalogs, as necessary.

Ø Dismantle devices to gain access to and removal of defective parts, using hoists,
cranes, hand tools, and power tools.

Ø  Inspect drives, motors, and belts; assess fluid levels; replace filters and perform
other maintenance actions by use of checklists.

Ø Inspect used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements - using
rulers, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments.

Ø Inspect, operate, and test machinery and equipment in order to diagnose
machine malfunctions.

Ø Operate cutting torches or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.

Ø Perform routine preventive maintenance and inspections to ensure that machines
operate properly and safely, building systems operate efficiently and that the
structures are in a sound condition.

Ø Plan and lay out repair work using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance
manuals, and schematic diagrams.

Ø Set up and operate machine tools to repair or fabricate machine parts, jigs and
fixtures, and tools.
