First Children Services is currently seeking a Transitions Teacher to fill an opening for the 2024/2025 School Year, consider joining our growing team This is an ideal position for retired persons or stay at home parents looking to rejoin the work force.

Who we are: We are a family operated and family-focused organization with a mission to provide life-changing care to the exceptional children we support.

Our TRANSITIONS program is a small group, center-based, home instruction program for students in grades 6-12 who are not able to attend public school due to anxiety, depression, or other mental challenges. The program includes group and individual counseling for each student in addition to their academic curriculum to transition them back to school. We are a passionate, diverse and dynamic group of team members; unique for our collaborative spirit and strict adherence to high-quality, evidence-based practice.

Qualifications:

  • NJ Certification as Teacher of the Handicapped, NJ Certification in Middle School Subjects or in selected High School Subjects.


  • Minimum 1 year of experience with students with mental health and/or developmental disabilities.


Reports To: Program Supervisor


Performance Responsibilities:

  • Instruct students in academic subjects, tailoring techniques to individual learning needs.

  • Set clear objectives for lessons and projects, communicating them effectively.

  • Guide and counsel students facing adjustment and academic challenges.

  • Prepare for classes and maintain preparation records as requested.

  • Develop course outlines aligned with program guidelines.

  • Encourage student exploration of learning opportunities.

  • Reinforce techniques like anxiety reduction and positive reinforcement.

  • Teach personal development skills such as goal setting and self-advocacy.

  • Motivate students through effective communication and feedback.

  • Administer and grade tests and assignments.

  • Maintain a positive learning climate through effective classroom management.

  • Collaborate with parents, counselors, and administrators to address student issues.

  • Develop individualized educational plans with stakeholders.

  • Maintain accurate student records and prepare reports as required.

  • Supervise, evaluate, and assign tasks to assistants and volunteers.

  • Attend professional meetings and conferences to enhance competence.

  • Perform administrative duties and ensure compliance with safety policies.

  • Utilize technology to enhance instruction.

  • Assist with school events and activities.

  • Obtain approval for all activities and expenditures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by Program Supervisor or leadership.
