POSITION SUMMARY:
The Shop Carpenters are responsible for performing tasks involved in the production of aluminum trailers. This includes the measuring, cutting, and drilling of aluminum, plywood, and aluminum exterior skin and many types of interior and exterior trim work. We have several key areas of activities which include finish, interior, exterior, ramps and doors, skin, and prep. Year-round inside work.
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reads and follows blueprints and work orders ensuring a quality product that meets customer demands.
- 2 years of carpentry experience prefered.
- Builds and assembles different parts of the trailer such as inside trim, outside trim, fenders, rough or finished wiring, framing and flooring, building ramps and doors, and many more areas.
- Obtains raw materials from Material Handlers.
- Buffs out rough edges using a hand-held power grinder.
- Notifies supervisor of any mechanical or material issues including but not limited to, defects in material, damage to the trailer, and deviations from the work order.
- Ensures that the finished product meets quality expectations. Strives for the highest level of quality and understands the need for continuous improvement; supports the concept of “good enough is never good enough”.
- Maintains a clean and safe work area; works to minimize scrap, places unused material back in the appropriate area, and disposes of waste appropriately.
- Follows all safety procedures, wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and reports any accidents or near misses to the supervisor immediately.
- Performs other related duties and assignments as required.
DESIRED EDUCATION//EXPERIENCE:
- Many of our best employees had previous experience in the building trades including framing, cabinetry, window, and door installation, deck building, interior trim, exterior finish carpentry, exterior siding, sheathing, tile work, and roofing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Must be able to work quickly without sacrificing quality or safety
- Must have a general understanding of basic carpentry
- Must be able to measure and cut accurately
- Must possess the ability to think creatively and solve problems
- Ability to read blueprints and work orders accurately (or learn)
- Strong time management and organizational abilities.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Standing – up to 80%
- Walking - up to 80%
- Lifting – approximately 55% during the shift
- Up to 25 pounds constantly
- Up to 50 pounds frequently
- Up to 100 pounds occasionally
- Twisting - 1-120 twists/day
- Bending - 1-120 bends/day
- Pushing & Pulling trailers with assistance – up to 15/day
- Working at heights on a ladder or on scaffolding with the use of a harness
- Kneeling – up to 10%
- Climbing – up to 40%
- Moderate deviations of the wrists
- Frequent use of both hands
- Long periods (8-10 hrs./day) of vibration
- Exposure to moderate, steady, and fairly loud noise, below 85db
- The ability to work in 80-90°ree;F temperatures during the summer
- May be exposed to slippery work surfaces (up to 10 hrs./day)
- Utilize appropriate PPE – may include use of a respirator
- Exposure to dust, dirt, and shavings
