CW Metals is a Minnesota based leader in metal recycling that specializes in processing non-ferrous metals, and ferrous metals. CW Metals has the necessary equipment to handle any shipment and regularly services large scrap dealers, salvage yards, machine shops, fabricators and contractors such as; siders, HVAC, electricians, plumbers etc. CW also handles industrial accounts requiring regular turnover of metal in roll -offs, luggers and boxes. We are part of a family-owned business and operate in 10 locations throughout MN with over 300 employees.

We are currently looking for a Recycled Metals Baler Technician to join our team at our Monticello, MN location. The Baler Technician reports to the Site Operations Manager. Essential functions include sorting of our nonferrous metals, equipment operations, light maintenance, loading and unloading trailers, learning and identifying different types of metals and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Cross-training opportunities in shipping/receiving and heavy equipment operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of our non-ferrous baler including safe operation, lock out tag out, feed control, and maintenance as needed
  • Identify and sort various grades of scrap metal
  • Feeds baler with forklift, skid-steer, wheel loader, and by hand
  • Safely and effectively load and unload various types of trailers with confidence
  • Quality control - looking for non-compliant items
  • Before weighing and tagging bails, make sure quality is acceptable to specifications
  • Communicate via radio with staff frequently about safety, commodity grade, deducts, and any other appropriate radio communication to ensure an efficient work environment
  • Keep equipment clean and safe for operation
  • Ensure the equipment is getting the maintenance attention it needs by keeping a list and notifying the appropriate personnel of any issues
  • Check mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems of the equipment to ensure functionality
  • Proficiently utilize visual scrap software
  • Follow company and OSHA safety guidelines
  • Will assist with various projects around the yard
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills And Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Prefer 1-3 years’ experience operating machinery equipment preferred
  • Previous experience in the metals recycling industry a plus
  • Forklift and/or Skid Steer experience a plus
  • Must be reliable, eager to work and willing to learn
  • Must be able to work in a team environment or independently
  • Must be punctual and demonstrate regular attendance
  • Ability to continuously stand or walk
  • Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs and lift frequently
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally

  • Moderate risk of exposure to unusual elements
  • Moderate to high risk of safety precautions
  • Moderate to high exposure to production environment
  • Wet, hot, humid, and wintry conditions (weather related)
