Canton Animal Hospital is seeking an organized, compassionate, and service-oriented Registered Veterinary Technician to join our team. You will support our veterinarians and during examinations and medical treatments and provide direct care to our animal patients. Candidates must be comfortable working with a variety of animals and know how to retrain them properly for evaluation and procedures. You also need to be familiar with proper cleaning and sanitizing techniques to ensure our facility is safe for our clients.

Veterinary Technician Duties and Responsibilities

  • Greet clients and obtain contact information and pet medical histories
  • Bring animals back to the exam room and perform an initial evaluation of their health
  • Provide assistance to the veterinarian during examinations, surgeries, and other procedures by;
    • Placing IV catheters, monitoring anesthesia, and endotracheal intubation
  • Handle basic care duties, such as cleaning and dressing wounds, administering medication, collecting samples, and checking vitals
  • Assisting during laboratory procedures including, but not limited to: obtaining and processing samples for hematology, cytology, urinalysis, microbiology, blood chemistry, and fecals
  • Knowledgeable in pharmacology, including; preparing and dispensing medications, calculating dosages, recognizing adverse reactions, knowledge of regulations regarding the safe handling of hazardous materials
  • Patient assessment, TPRs, triage
  • Proficient in dental prophylaxis
  • Provide food and water to animals retained more than a day and observe any unusual health issues
  • Sterilize tools and restock examination and operating rooms
  • Inform and educate families about at-home care for their pets
  • Update patient files and handle other administrative duties as necessary

Veterinary Technician Requirements and Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology, animal science, or a related field from an accredited program
  • 1+ years of veterinary experience
  • Working knowledge of standard industry tools and equipment
  • Solid understanding of animal behavior and healthcare
  • Passion for working with animals and their owners
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Able to restrain larger pets when necessary
  • Flexible schedule
