Peer Advocate

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
A Peer Advocate (or Peer Recovery Specialist) will work with both behavioral and primary care providers to deliver services that are geared toward helping patients in the development of healthy life choices. The Peer Support Specialist assists patients in the development of strengths-based recovery goals and provides information on ways to maintain personal wellness and recovery. The Peer Support Specialist works collaboratively with other members of the treatment team to assist in advocating on behalf of patient, ensuring recovery oriented principles are being utilized and providing hope and support to patients as they work toward attainment of goals.
Peer Specialist facilitates the development of recovery skills. The purpose of a Peer Specialist is:
- Provide opportunities for individuals receiving services to direct their own recovery process.
- Teach and support acquisition and utilization of skills needed to facilitate individual recovery.
- Promote the knowledge of available service options and choices.
- Promote the utilization of natural resources/supports with in the community.
- Facilitate the development of a sense of wellness and self-worth.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Acquire and utilize Motivational Interviewing skills in the provision of services.
Identify barriers patients have in accessing health services and help patients develop plans to overcome barriers.
Refer service recipients to the appropriate staff for issues that fall outside the scope of peer services.
Attend regularly schedule supervision meetings, and attend other meetings and trainings, as required.
Model/mentor recovery process and demonstrate coping skills.
Acts as role model to person in recovery to inspire hope, share life experiences and lessons learned as a person in recovery.
Engage and build rapport with individuals who may be at-risk and provide ‘stage-of-change’ appropriate recovery education and supports, e.g. usage of the leveling system and evidence-based practices.
Assist in the orientation process for persons who are new to receiving SA/MH or co-occurring condition services.
Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and competence and be trauma informed as relevant to the needs of individuals in recovery.
Motivates, encourages and celebrate achievements and milestones of patients.
Assists and helps develop to expand available recovery support resources.
Act as an advocate for the protection of patient rights.
Bridging, navigating and connecting with the community and system of care to better assist our patients in their recovery.
Encourages wellness, self-care, life skills, goal setting, and decision-making skills to person served throughout their recovery.
Maintains case history records, properly documents according to established regulations and approved standards.
Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Have personal experience and knowledge of recovery.
Be able to establish trusting relationships with their peers.
Be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
Have a good knowledge of community recover-oriented resources.
Possessing experience related to delivery of services in a social service setting preferred.
Ability to orally communicate effectively with others.
PC Proficient (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
Ability to review, understand, and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
Comfortable providing treatment across the lifespan.
Willingness and ability to work flexible schedule, including evenings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to endure short, intermittent, and/or long periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
Accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, e.g. pens, pencils, calculators, computer keyboard, telephone, etc.
Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 25 pounds or less over distances of 100 yards.
Ability to move, stack, and store education and prevention materials and supplies in storage area, including lifting materials and placing on shelves at levels 5’ 6” and lower.
Ability to transport self to other departments, conference rooms, and on occasion to off-site locations to accomplish job responsibilities, attend meetings, workshops, seminars, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must self-identify as a current or past consumer of mental health and/or substance abuse services can relate to others who are now using those services. A mental health consumer is someone who has met at some point in his/her adult life the following definition: an adult with a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder of sufficient duration to meet diagnosable criteria as specified within DSM-5 that has resulted in functional impairment which has substantially interfered with or limited one or more major activities.
High School Diploma or GED (desirable but not required). Have demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing. Have maintained at least 12 months of successful full or part-time paid or voluntary work experience (not necessarily consecutive). To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
