Position Overview: We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Biotech/Laboratory Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations and standards within our biotech/laboratory environment. This role will involve implementing and maintaining EHS programs, conducting risk assessments, providing training to staff, and promoting a culture of safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. EHS Program Management:

    • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs and procedures tailored to the biotech/laboratory environment.
    • Stay current with relevant regulations and standards and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal EHS requirements.
    • Regularly review and update EHS policies and procedures to reflect best practices and emerging trends.

  2. Risk Assessment and Mitigation:

    • Conduct thorough risk assessments of laboratory processes, equipment, and facilities to identify potential hazards.
    • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate risks and minimize the likelihood of accidents, injuries, and environmental incidents.
    • Collaborate with research and operations teams to implement safety controls and ergonomic improvements.

  3. Training and Education:

    • Develop and deliver EHS training programs for laboratory personnel, emphasizing safe work practices, hazard recognition, and emergency response procedures.
    • Provide ongoing education and guidance to staff on EHS policies, regulations, and best practices.
    • Foster a culture of safety awareness and accountability throughout the organization.

  4. Incident Investigation and Reporting:

    • Investigate accidents, near misses, and environmental incidents to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
    • Prepare thorough incident reports documenting findings, corrective actions, and lessons learned.
    • Work closely with management and regulatory agencies to ensure timely reporting and resolution of incidents.

  5. Compliance Monitoring and Auditing:

    • Conduct regular inspections and audits of laboratory facilities and operations to assess compliance with EHS regulations and company policies.
    • Track and monitor EHS metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify trends and areas for improvement.
    • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to address compliance gaps and implement corrective actions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Biology, Chemistry, or related field. Advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., CIH, CSP, CHMM) preferred.
  • Experience working within a biotech or laboratory setting in a safety role
  • Experience or broad knowledge of EHS programs
  • Minimum of [X] years of experience in a biotech/laboratory EHS role, with a strong understanding of laboratory safety principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable EHS regulations and standards, including OSHA, EPA, CDC, and NIH guidelines.
  • Experience developing and implementing EHS programs, conducting risk assessments, and delivering training to diverse audiences.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify hazards, assess risks, and develop effective control measures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and EHS software tools.
