Department: Medical Reports To Medical Assistant Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Work Schedule: Set 8-Hour Shift Positions Supervised: None

Amounts of Travel Required: HIGH

POSITION SUMMARY

Travels from office to office as needed for coverage is a versatile healthcare professional who assists with administrative and clinical tasks. It also serves as the liaison between the patient and the physician.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Willing to travel to different locations to provide coverage as needed, often on short notice.

·         Adaptable to different work environments and quickly learn new procedures and protocols.

·         Excellent communication skills to interact with patients, healthcare providers, and office staff.

·         Familiarizes self with patients’ charts for the day’s visits.

·         Ensures that all equipment in the exam room is clean and correctly set up before each patient encounters.

·         Place the patients in the examination room, ensuring they are as comfortable as possible.

·         Proficient in various administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments and updating patient records.

·         Experienced in clinical tasks such as taking vital signs and chief complaints, documenting the information in the patient’s chart, and providing patient education.

·         Is readily available to the physician. At least one (1) sentence should be written for the HPI during the visit. Also updates patient weight and height.

·         Informs patients of steps for procedure scheduling if required and precautions before the procedure.

·         Assists physicians with in-office procedures using sterile procedure guidelines to ensure non-contamination of the sterile field. Sets up appropriate surgical instrument tray.

·         Screens telephone calls for the physicians. Takes accurate clinical messages within the limits of his/her knowledge and practice policy—documents telephone calls accurately in our EMR system.

·         Takes calls from the pharmacist. Calls in prescriptions and prescription refills accurately to the pharmacy as directed by the physicians and documents accurately in the medical record. Completes medication prior authorizations.

·         Place patient Holter monitors and event monitors. Explains policies and procedures to the patient. Track monitors on the spreadsheet and follow up for the return of monitors.

·         Cleans and restocks exam rooms for the next day’s use.

·         Maintains lab area and sterilizes equipment.

·         Orders clinical supplies as needed.

·         Ensures that reports from diagnostic tests are ordered and have been received.

·         Prepares all diagnostic reports for availability to physicians. Ensure they are screened and initialed before filing in our EMR.

·         Responsible for making sure electronic patient charts are accurate and complete.

·         Follow up with patients via telephone or letter regarding missed appointments and/or tests.

·         Assist in maintaining all clinical equipment, including sterilizing, if applicable. Evaluates all equipment for damage and report to the Medical Assistant Supervisor.

·         Communicates effectively with patients as needed via phone, fax, mail, and email.

·         Maintains strict confidentiality.

·         Capable of working independently and as a part of the team, depending on office needs.

·         Prepares patients for EKGs and performs EKGs as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent is required. Completion of a Certified Medical Assistant Program (CMA) is required.

Experience: Two years’ experience preferred.

Certificates & Licenses: CPR Certification, CMA.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Language – Ability to communicate verbally and understand details and instructions.

Mathematical – Can perform basic mathematical calculations.

Technical Aptitude – Comprehend medical topics and specialized information.

Mental/Reasoning – Ability to exercise sound judgment, accurately take and record patient information, and assist with exams while coordinating other services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Medical Assistants must be able to position and/or transfer an average adult patient and possess gross coordination and dexterity sufficient to perform other patient care duties as required. The employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, kneel/crouch, and stand and walk, spending many hours on his/her feet. Most procedures require the Medical Assistant to hear and see well to complete tasks accurately.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Working conditions are usually pleasant, with the primary work environment being conducted in air-conditioned, well-lit exam rooms and office space. The work environment may include exposure to hazardous material, including bodily fluids and cleaning reagents. Given these conditions, employees must wear protective garments and strictly adhere to safety policies.

The Medical Assistant position requires the employee to work with other members of staff to coordinate patient care. It is essential that the Medical Assistant takes instruction well and positively interacts with other employees to fulfill the duties of the job.

Salary: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour
