ECC and Lower School Counselor  

 

Lake Forest Country Day School (LFCDS) seeks a talented and dedicated full-time Early Childhood and Lower School Counselor starting in August 2024. This qualified candidate will join the Student Support team in providing social-emotional support to students to help improve emotional intelligence and develop the regulation skills necessary for optimal learning. The candidate will work collaboratively with the Student Support team, classroom teachers, parents, and administrators in our collective efforts to help children discover their strengths and fulfill their potential.  

 

LFCDS, located on a 30-acre campus about 30 miles north of Chicago, Illinois, is a co-educational, independent day school serving 400 students from age 2 through eighth grade. The School has a long tradition of producing thoughtful, confident, and successful students. Children are known, loved, and challenged at LFCDS, and a state-of-the-art facility provides a remarkable setting for inspired teaching, academic rigor, and attention to individual needs. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support social-emotional needs of students in preschool through 4th grade.

  • Conduct individual and group school counseling to foster student growth and success.

  • Conduct classroom observations and advise teachers on appropriate interventions within the classroom. 

  • Work with the Director of Student Support, Division Heads, Student Support team, Upper School Counselor, and faculty to address behavioral, emotional, and social concerns and needs.

  • Attend grade-level team and consultation meetings and advise on best practices for supporting students.

  • Assist with school-wide initiatives such as parent, faculty, and student education around mental health topics and social-emotional learning. 

  • Identify and track students with social-emotional needs.

  • Teach SEL lessons with a focus on emotional regulation and problem-solving skills in grades Junior Kindergarten through 4th.

  • Assist in developing student intervention plans to support the social-emotional, academic, and behavioral needs of students.

  • Provide referrals, consultation, and collaboration with outside providers as necessary.

  • Work with families to provide appropriate resources and referrals when additional intervention and support are recommended for student well-being and growth. 

  • Assist with crisis intervention and response when necessary. 

  • Develop intervention strategies to increase academic, behavioral, and social success within the school community. 

 

Professional and Personal Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in social work/school counseling/counseling/psychology or related field required.

  • LCPC/LPC/LCSW/LSW/Professional Educator License (School Counselor) preferred.

  • Licensure in the state of Illinois

  • Experience working with children and families, ideally in an educational setting.

  • Training and experience with safety and risk assessment. 

  • Experience working with early childhood and lower school students is preferred.

  • Knowledge of the social-emotional and developmental needs of children.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills as well as proven ability to work with a diversity of colleagues and stakeholders at all levels. 

  • A willingness to learn and grow professionally.

  • Outstanding judgment and emotional maturity.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • High level of energy, creativity, positive attitude, sense of humor, and flexibility.
