TITLE:Manager, Senior AccountantRESPONSIBLE TO:Assistant ControllerDIVISION/DEPT:Operations/AccountingSUPERVISES:Accounting Specialist(s)FLSA STATUS:Exempt

BASIC FUNCTION:

• Directly responsible for the management and maintenance of all activity related to the organization’s general ledger. This includes the monthly closing process, reconciliations of GL accounts, and supervision of the accounting operations staff.

• Ensure the proper recording of financial activities involving grant funds (federal and non-federal) awarded to GII are in compliance with rules and regulations (GAAP, 2 CFR, OMB circulars, grantor and/or agency specifies requirements, and GII accounting policies and procedures). Also, remain current on new procedures and regulations affecting the company and industry.


SPECIFIC DUTIES:

General Ledger

• Management of the general ledger and monthly close process for GII and all related entities

• Oversight and coordination of transactional data into the general ledger system

• Responsible for the preparation/review of general ledger account reconciliations including cash, account receivables, prepaid expenses, accounts payable, accrued expenses, deferred income, notes payable, payroll related accounts, and other accounts

• Prepare/Review monthly bank reconciliation

• Maintenance of Fixed Assets records including depreciation, depreciation projections, budget to actual and asset roll forwards

• Prepare/review computation, reporting, and collection of member dues

• Manage the organization’s investments with respect to the recording and tracking within the accounting systems, and report compliance with organization’s investment policies

• Preparation/Review of 1099s reporting for independent contractors

• Coordinate with all areas of the organization the collection of data required for the annual audit and tax returns

• Assist Assistant Controller with maintaining the chart of accounts and provide proper training to team and employees

• Prepare ad hoc reports as requested

Policies and Procedures

• Assist with maintenance of accounting team policies and procedures in accordance with internal control practices and grant funder requirements

• Recommend and implement procedure changes that provide additional internal controls and/or process efficiencies

Staff Supervision

• Supervision of Accounting Specialist(s)

• Provide financial training and technical support to staff on accounting issues

Other

• Support accounting software systems maintenance and implementation of new systems

• Other duties as assigned by the Controller and Assistant Controller

RELATIONSHIPS:

• Internal: Contact with accounting staff to carry out activities within the department. Frequent contact with all staff on budgetary and disbursement matters and departmental services.

• External: Normal contact with auditor, banking relationships, vendors, and consultants

• GII Members: Contact on grant matters, dues, and association grant matters

• Governmental Officials: Occasional contact with grant funding agencies and state tax agencies for various sales tax activities

SKILLS NEEDED:

• Thorough understanding of general accepted accounting principles (GAAP), budgeting principles and practices as they apply to nonprofit organizations

• Understanding of government grant regulations (2 CFR 200)

• Working knowledge of accounting database systems, spreadsheet, and word applications along with excellent ability to apply financial analysis techniques and implement solutions

• Proven leadership and management skills

• Ability to work independently, excellent time management skills, ability to meet multiple deadlines and prioritize workload

• Knowledge of and ability to apply financial analysis techniques

• Ability to supervise and train staff

• Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing

• Ability to use discretion when dealing with confidential information

• Ability and willingness to adjust to frequently changing fast paced environment

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree with major in accounting, or minor in accounting with professional accounting experience is preferred. Combination of equivalent education and experience is also accepted. CPA is a plus; Master’s Degree is a plus.

EXPERIENCE: Ten or more years of progressive accounting experience in a professional capacity. Five or more years of project monitoring and/or grant management experience. Prior experience working at a non-profit organization is desirable.

DECISION MAKING: Supervisory decision (such as work scheduling, etc.). Decisions regarding proper recording of financial transactions. Time management decisions. Application of accounting and financial principles to decisions within scope of responsibility.

SUPERVISION: General – Latitude is given to determine approaches, procedures and methodologies for accomplishing the work. Receives administrative review. Work is reviewed to assure that it is conceptually sound and meets assignment objectives.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Sedentary, lifting 10lbs. maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as dockets, ledgers and files. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.

EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Moderate, occasional short deadlines requiring some overtime. Work environment occasionally hectic with occasional periods of high stress.
