The YWCA Greater Harrisburg is seeking a Classroom Float / Cook for our Pre-K Counts program.

This position consists of two areas of responsibility: The Cook is responsible for preparing nutritious meals throughout the year for participants in the Grace Pollock Child Development Center and provides high quality school age care through safe and attentive supervision which includes the implementation of approved lesson plans and age-appropriate activities. As a Classroom Floater, this position will float between all classrooms as the need arises and in order to maintain proper teacher/child ratio.

Position Details:

• Full Time - M-F, 9am-5pm
• Year round position

Successful Candidates Will:
As a cook:

• Plan and prepare nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack meals according to guidelines established through the Department of Agriculture CACFP Program.
• Prepare and post monthly menus; providing a copy to the Center Director and Vice President of Childcare Programs one week prior to the beginning of the next month.
• Order food necessary to prepare, healthy, cost-effective meals. Verify and store all deliveries by clearly identifying items and noting expiration dates. All orders must be approved by Center Director.
• Maintain health and safety standards established by the Department of Health for food preparation.

As a classroom floater:

Provide direct supervision of children in the assigned classroom. Maintains visual observation at all times to ensure the safety of children.

• Assist in the implementation of program activities as required by the Center Director.
• Follow established emergency and accident procedures and provide an immediate response to quickly comfort children in distress.
• Communicate directly with the children encouraging and guiding them in age-appropriate activities providing regular and meaningful interaction that demonstrates affection, interest and respect for children, both verbally and nonverbally through smiling, appropriate touching and holding.
• Assists supervisor or other staff in maintaining a clean and attractive environment through use of routine and emergency housekeeping practices, e.g. cleaning up after snacks and meals, art projects, accidents, etc.

Position Requirements:

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED with experience in institutional or restaurant food preparation.
• Minimum of two (2) years experience working with diverse groups of young children.
• Thorough understanding of the principles of child development and preschool educational methods.
• Ability to be mentally alert and observant at all times when responsible for children.
• Ability to speak and read clearly to communicate easily with children under care with knowledge of language development and understanding.
• FBI, Child Abuse, and State Police Clearances; as well as required DPW Health Assessment and Tuberculosis test successfully completed.
