ROLE SUMMARY

The primary function of the Controller is to maintain a system of internal controls sufficient to ensure that all transactions are executed with the specific intent and authorization of manager, the assets of the company are appropriately safeguarded and the financial management reporting systems accurately capture all financial data relating to transactions and provide meaningful financial reports to provide the basis for sound management decisions. The Controller also functions as the principal source of information to the President with respect to keeping him informed about the financial status of specific projects. The Controller also functions as the manager of automated information systems including hardware and software acquisition and maintenance.

  • Autonomy and Decision Making: The Controller has the authority to take actions necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position as long as any action taken pursuant to this grant of authority complies with existing laws/regulations and company policy, and conforms with sound ethical business practice.

KEY ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares and reviews monthly operating results including Profit & Loss, Work in Progress, and Budget Variance Reports. Ensures that the books are closed on a timely basis each month and communicates all results to the President.
  • Assembling timely and accurate billings to customers.
  • Reviews cash and investments daily.
  • Meets, as needed with the President and/or Project Managers to point out and discuss the financial status of individual projects.
  • Troubleshoots computer problems; coordinates the acquisition of hardware and software including maintenance updates.
  • Advises/assists Project Managers and other staff as needed.
  • Supervises payroll preparation and reporting.
  • Assists in the development of PowerPoint presentations.
  • Participates in quarterly Advisory Board Meetings.
  • Supervises accounts receivable and accounts payable functions.
  • Periodically checks the work of subordinates. Offers guidance and assistance where warranted.
  • Assists in the annual development of the fixed overhead budget.
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings or more often as may be needed.
  • Attends various other special purpose meetings as requested.
  • Functions as the Pension and Profit Sharing Administrator.
  • Coordinates the annual audit review by the CPA firm and all other audits conducted by external parties.
  • Analyzes select general ledger accounts.
  • Resolves human resource issues that may arise with subordinates.
  • Performs the accounting functions for WHI, IBT and/or other related entities.
  • Monitors and enforces compliance with computer software license agreements.
  • Prepares various reports as may be required by management, banks and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Evaluates the performance of employees in accordance with Company policy.
  • Performs any other task or duty as may be requested or assigned by the President.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY

  • Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and project cost accounting.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Timberline System.
  • Knowledge of Payroll Tax regulations.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and to assign priorities.
  • Ability to delegate effectively.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people including, but not necessarily limited to, bankers, insurance professionals, consultants, subordinates, co-workers, vendors, etc.
  • Ability to compose clear, concise, and professional business correspondence.
  • Analytical skills and the ability to quickly identify aberrant situations relating to the integrity of all financial data including financial reports, contracts, invoices, and other documents upon which reliance is placed by the President.
  • Negotiating skills.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • Ability to effectively Plan, Organize, Direct and Control all matters within the sphere of the incumbent’s authority.
  • Knowledge of the various accounting and industry specific software packages used by the Company.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally.


EDUCATION

  • BS/BA in Business Administration with a major in Accounting is required. MBA preferred. CPA or CMA preferred.



EXPERIENCE

  • 3-5 years experience as controller preferred
  • 5-10 years overall experience in accounting
  • Building Construction industry specific experience preferred.


CERTIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS

  • CPA or CMA preferred.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds.
  • May require periods of overnight travel.
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours to meet business demands.
  • Normal office environment, but may also be exposed to extreme conditions (hot or cold).
  • Frequent activity: Sitting, Viewing Computer Screen.
  • Occasional activity: Standing, Walking, Bending, Reaching above Shoulder, Pushing, Pulling, Climbing.
