Position Description

The kitchen steward is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness and sanitation of all kitchen areas and equipment. This role involves supporting kitchen staff and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Dishwashing and Sanitation: Wash and sanitize all kitchen utensils, dishes, pots, pans, and equipment according to established standards. Ensure that all items are cleaned thoroughly and stored appropriately.

  • Cleaning and Maintenance: Clean kitchen surfaces, including countertops, sinks, stovetops, and appliances, using designated cleaning agents and equipment. Perform routine maintenance tasks to keep kitchen equipment in good working condition.

  • Waste Management: Dispose of kitchen waste and garbage in a hygienic manner. Monitor waste bins and recycling areas to ensure proper disposal and recycling practices are followed.

  • Stock Management: Assist in receiving, storing, and rotating food and supplies to ensure freshness and minimize waste. Keep inventory of cleaning supplies and notify management when supplies need to be replenished.

  • Adherence to Safety Standards: Follow all health and safety regulations and procedures, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals and adherence to sanitation guidelines. Report any safety hazards or maintenance issues to the appropriate personnel.

  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with kitchen staff to support efficient operations. Assist chefs and cooks as needed with food preparation, plating, and serving during busy periods.

  • Organization and Cleanliness: Maintain cleanliness and organization in all kitchen areas, including storage areas and walk-in refrigerators/freezers. Ensure that all cleaning equipment and supplies are stored properly.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous experience in a kitchen environment or similar role is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of proper sanitation and cleaning techniques.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and cleanliness.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well within a team.
  • Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and lift heavy objects if required.
