Within the administrative structure of the sasi Article 16 clinic and the requirements of New York State for the profession of Speech/Language Pathology, the Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP) shall develop and deliver professional services to individuals who are Intellectually Disabled / Developmentally Disabled (ID/DD) who require and desire such services.

In a work environment such as sasi, it is necessary for the SLP to work cooperatively with all members of the individual’s treatment team to help ensure favorable treatment outcomes and good communication.

Responsibilities and Illustrative Duties:

1. Assesses each individual to determine their verbal and/or non-verbal skills; cognitive and perceptual language skills; and, speech, voice and language abilities. Dysphagia screening and assessments may also be completed initially and as needed thereafter.

2. Develops a Treatment Plan with specific goals and objectives that include the nature, frequency, duration and modalities of the recommended therapeutic interventions related to the Clinic Service Request and Assessment.

3. Initiates a therapeutic program using approved speech/language pathology methodologies designed to develop, improve, or prevent decline of function. Areas addressed may include receptive and expressive language skills, articulation and phonology, motor speech, fluency, voice resonance, use of Augmentative Communication devices, and swallowing therapy.

4.Initiates or attends team meetings for individuals on their case load so as to discuss areas of concern, or to develop, modify, or discontinue therapy.

5. Documents all services provided following procedures determined by sasi administration and/or other certifying or oversight organizations.

6. Maintains a working knowledge of developments in the field of speech/language pathology by attending conferences and in-service programs, and by maintaining appropriate membership in professional organizations.

7. Provides in-service training programs or other demonstrations to staff of the clinic, day habilitation and residential programs, as needed to assist, in a professional and timely manner. Works collaboratively with the agency workforce trainers to ensure that all staff are trained properly. Acts as a consultant to parents and staff regarding communication disorders.

8. Develops or facilitates the purchase of augmentative communication systems, as necessary, for nonverbal individuals; trains participants and staff in use of these systems (signing, picture boards, electronic communication devices, etc.).

9. Follow policies and procedures of OPWDD, the Article 16 clinic, and the Agency.

Qualifications:

Successful completion of a Speech Language Pathologist program recognized by the Council on Academic Accreditation PLUS current licensure (with the exception of CFY) within NY State. Limited license may be required for CFY candidates (directly billing Medicare). ASHA certification preferred.
