The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Specialist, Health Promotions, Clean Air Initiatives. Working as a member of the Health Promotion & Education department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.


This position will coordinate, implement, and evaluate the entire grant cycle including planning, implementation, and evaluation of multiple grant projects simultaneously to achieve indoor/outdoor risk reduction objectives. Candidate will be provided with grant contract containing a checklist of objectives and deliverables with dates for completion. The successful candidate will gain experience in all aspects of grant management. This 100% grant-funded position requires the ability to simultaneous manage multiple projects including grant-writing, budgeting, reporting, analysis and evaluation.


Location: The position is located at the American Lung Association’s Springfield, IL office and will be a hybrid of in-person and virtual work.


Responsibilities:

  • Work with project director to develop, implement and evaluate grant funded projects that focus on indoor and outdoor air quality.
  • Provide technical support relating to indoor/outdoor air quality, interpret technical data, and understand regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Actively seek new funding opportunities and propose these opportunities during internal staff meetings.
  • Participate in ongoing strategic planning activities.
  • Answer and report public phone calls.
  • Cultivate and maintain partnerships with all program stakeholders.
  • Conduct projects activities including training, presentations, webinars, and other events and serve as the lead for these activities.
  • Develop and adhere to project timelines to ensure achievement of all grant program objectives. Work with supervisor to adjust the scope of work of assigned programs to meet program objectives.
  • Connect and enhance internal and external collaborations and partnerships.
  • Draft periodic progress reports of grant activities.
  • Research and implement best practices for air quality programs and identify priority populations across multiple jurisdictions with widely variable socioeconomic factors.
  • Actively participate in coalitions and workgroups identified in the grant projects.
  • Provide public health education on indoor/outdoor air quality research and activities.
  • Participate in and support community-based programs relating to clean air initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, environmental studies, biology, chemistry, physics, public health, or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ability to read and write complex technical documents and interpret data of a scientific and/or technical nature.
  • Knowledge of indoor and outdoor pollution sources and standards or basic chemistry knowledge.
  • Minimum 1 year experience developing and implementing community awareness, education, and programs specifically related to areas of environmental science through professional/educational experience.
  • Self-starter mentality with the ability to develop and implement new projects and propose new ideas.
  • Ability to work independently, with a team, and as a project leader.
  • Able to travel for events, meetings and conferences as required for grant projects.
  • Ability to lift approximately 25 lbs. when assisting with local events.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and steward relationships across a diverse population.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s license and your own reliable transportation with the ability to travel within assigned area 10% of the time for meetings and conferences, as well as the flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required.
  • Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office and teleconference applications. Basic coding and GIS skills are helpful.

Compensation: Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. The target hiring range for this position is between $45,000 and $48,000 per annum.

  • Paid Leave - 10 vacation days in the first year (15 days thereafter), 2 personal days and 15 sick days per year, as well as 12 company-paid holidays per year. We also offer Paid Parental Leave for eligible employees.
  • Insurance - Employees (and their eligible dependents) can enroll in our medical, dental, and vision plans, as well as voluntary plans for critical illness, accident, hospital indemnity, short-term disability and supplemental life/AD&D insurance.
