SUMMARY

Under department head's supervision, is responsible for a large variety of technical, para-professional, and advanced duties in support services. This individual performs related and other work as required.


REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Training and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 60 semester hours of successful college coursework or 2 years of paid library experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Good knowledge of current technology.


Skills to:

  1. type accurately;
  2. work with library processing materials, requiring manual dexterity;
  3. format and print labels;
  4. use copiers and printers;
  5. organize and plan daily tasks effectively and solve routine problems with work procedures;
  6. work with minimum supervision.

Ability to:

  1. use Dewey Decimal system;
  2. work with library materials in a variety of formats and adjust procedures accordingly;
  3. use an integrated library system;
  4. use electronic and printed materials, resources and databases;
  5. operate specialized equipment;
  6. correctly match a physical library item to a catalog record;
  7. perform basic maintenance on a label printer;
  8. follow library principles, policies and procedures;
  9. understand and follow written and oral instructions;
  10. use resourcefulness, tact, courtesy, and respect in dealing professionally with library patrons, employees, and vendors;
  11. make decisions based on established policies and practices;
  12. establish good patron and staff rapport;
  13. deal with multiple and extra unexpected tasks simultaneously.
  14. use correct grammar, punctuation, and formatting to proofread labels
  15. meet daily workload goals with a high degree of accuracy
  16. count items on a book truck and correctly match the number with a work slip
  17. recognize and report damaged items

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, twist, talk, hear, and use hands to reach for, finger, grasp, handle, feel and/or operate objects, tools, or controls. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


The employee is occasionally to frequently, required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel, and crawl. The employee must occasionally to frequently lift and/or carry up to 20 pounds, frequently to constantly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds. Employee must frequently to constantly push and/or pull loaded book carts and/or boxes of materials weighing up to 75 pounds.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Primarily responsible for organizing library materials received from the Acquisitions Department and ensuring they are ready and suitable for cataloging.
  2. Shares responsibility for ensuring cataloged items are ready for release to the Interlibrary Loans Department.
  3. Follows the Cataloging Worksheet to accurately count items and correctly process items for cataloging.
  4. Shares responsibility for repairing broken and damaged items and restoring their records to the database if needed; reports new damaged items to the Cataloging Department Head.
  5. Shares responsibility for adding item records to Workflows when additional copies are received or when records have been deleted in error.
  6. Shares responsibility for updating labels for items on branch shelves.
  7. Professional Development: Meets monthly with supervisor to review work plan; attends other meetings as necessary. This position requires travel to other locations for work, meetings, and training.
  8. Performs other duties as required.

PRESENT SCHEDULE [subject to change without notice]; Monday - Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (1/2 hour unpaid lunch)
